About Joelle
I'm a native speaker of American English--born and raised in Oregon, but a long-time resident of both Colorado and North Carolina. I've lived in Germany, Austria, and Spain. I have some fun hobbies, like playing fiddle and metalsmithing, and I love movies, reading, travel, and food:)
I was trained as a German teacher and an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in the United States, and taught students from 4th grade through adult. I am also a trained copyeditor.
I like to think I am especially sensitive to the needs of foreign language learners because I'm one myself! I was not lucky enough to be born into a bilingual household, so I've learned my foreign languages from scratch, just like most of my students.

I am Level 5 TEFL-certified and am a native speaker of American English. I have many years of experience teaching students from 4th grade to adults. I've used everything to teach English--conversation, textbooks, authentic materials (like magazines and popular music), and games and songs (for children, especially, though these can be great for adults, too!).
I am passionate about language teaching (I am also a German teacher), and I'm especially sensitive to the needs of adult foreign language learners because I've been in their language-learning shoes more than once!
I'm great at teaching the basics, like grammar, spelling, and reading, but I also love conversation, which is where I think one-on-one tutoring really shines. I can adapt my style and methodology to match the needs of my students. Want some serious grammar lessons? I'm on it. Need feedback on pronunciation? You got it. Want to learn to use business vocabulary in context? Or gain confidence in conversation by just chatting about life? Let's do it!
