About Tommy
My style to tutoring is focused on first helping the student with their approach to a subject before providing more of it. While education on new topics is an important factor of tutoring and something I provide, I find it essential to discuss with the student what they know and how they feel beforehand. Difficulties with academic subjects is not for lack of information - there's more than enough easily available - but in learning it, retaining it, and organizing it in a way that doesn't feel overwhelming and that won't be forgotten quickly. Initial stages of tutoring will deal with the student's interest in the subject, their emotions around it, and any stress they may be experiencing relating to it, to ensure the tutoring sessions remain a place to exhale and take stock instead of becoming an additional source of stress. Following this, we'll review what the student knows, what they're currently learning, and what they feel they have difficulty with. From this point on, lessons take a deeply individualized approach according to the student's needs, but an emphasis is always maintained on not providing new information at a faster pace than it can be genuinely understood and integrated into one's understanding of psychology. Having attained a First Class Honors in the bachelor's for Applied Psychology at University College Cork, and currently studying in a Master's program for Public Mental Health with the University of Turku, Finland, I'm familiar with the balancing act of learning and incorporating very different kinds of information from different areas of psychology. Integrating small-scale clinical training, precise neuroscience experiments, and large-scale social statistics into a single understanding of psychology has been a task I've become very familiar with. Likewise, my mixed-methods bachelor's thesis requiring both quantitative and qualitative data collection/analysis, coupled with a scholarship-funded systematic review conducted independently between academic years, gives me a wide number of perspectives into psychological research.

The experience of studying psychology can be overwhelming given the sheer amount of information available and skills required, particularly when you're interested in the subject long-term and want to figure out which area works best for you. Being a Master's student in psychology with a first class honour's BA in applied psychology, I've run into some of these hurdles myself. As learning to overcome them is a very individualised process, my lessons are not focused on just providing more information to memorise, but helping you navigate the field as a whole depending on your needs.
Together, we can explore the areas that interest you most and shore up any necessary areas that you may be struggling with, whether due to technical challenges in statistics or essay writing, or motivational barriers and stress associated with the subject. In doing so, we'll cement the fundamentals and figure out sustainable ways for you to explore psychology in the long-term.

I’ve previously used Tommy as a German tutor for an upcoming exam, and had an amazing learning experience during our sessions. I really struggled with speaking anxiety, as most language learners tend to. His patience and reassurance helped me break my mental block and allowed me to practice speaking more freely. What I appreciated most about my tutoring sessions with Tommy, however, is his ability to recognize when a student can be pushed outside their comfort zone, and when to take a step back to allow them to practice areas they’re still struggling with. My confidence in speaking and understanding German has improved so much. Highly recommended!
