About Isabella

I am currently in the final term of my master’s in English Literature (1700–1830) at the University of Oxford. I have greatly valued the research opportunities this has provided, particularly my work on Jane Austen, and I am now in the process of applying for doctoral study on girls’ education in the nineteenth century. These academic interests were developed during my undergraduate degree at the University of Bristol, during which I was an active member of the Literature Society and the Creative Writing Society. I am also part of Mensa, and I enjoy participating in its events and special interest groups that foster analytical thinking and intellectual engagement – particularly in relation to literature.

I offer tutoring sessions of one to two hours in English Literature for students at all levels, from GCSE to undergraduate, and in English Language up to GCSE. In addition, I am happy to provide support with Oxford and Cambridge Admissions Tests, interview preparation, and personal statement writing. I have a range of teaching experience: during my undergraduate studies, I was elected to be a Peer Mentor, leading Peer Assisted Study Sessions for students in earlier years. These sessions provided academic support for students seeking clarification on challenging topics and guidance on essay writing; the position thus required approachability and strong interpersonal skills, in combination with consistent professionalism, responsibility, and reliability. Most importantly, it taught me to communicate intricate ideas in accessible and engaging ways, adapting explanations to suit individual learning styles. As a master’s student, I have become involved in my college's outreach programme by delivering lectures and academic taster sessions to visiting school groups. These sessions require me to present complex academic topics in an enjoyable and accessible manner for students of varying ages and educational backgrounds. I also run smaller group sessions and mock one-on-one supervisions, in which I tailor content to accommodate diverse ability levels, leading me to think inventively about how best to convey conceptual material. Through this experience, I have refined the flexible and creative approach to teaching I began to develop as an undergraduate. As a result, my approach to teaching is highly individualised, tailored to suit each student’s specific needs. I believe the most effective teachers are not necessarily those who have progressed effortlessly through their education – since they are not used to approaching topics from multiple angles – but rather those who have encountered and overcome challenges, and in doing so, developed the empathy, adaptability, and insight required to support others in similar situations. Having been diagnosed with dyslexia only at university, I had to work extremely hard throughout school to achieve my academic goals. This experience has affirmed my belief that every student can succeed with the right guidance, and has given me the confidence to support both those who are struggling, and those who are already excelling but wish to be stretched even further.
