I begin with a phonics based approach. I teach letter sounds, then create songs that are personal using these sounds. Child acts, sings, hops, or skips sounds (or syllables or vocabulary or what they’re learning). Child is engaged and having fun learning. Lesson: Child chooses a favorite book. I change my voice or use a puppet, with emphasis on beginning sounds of words while s/he helps me point to the words (reinforcing letter recognition, letter sounds and reading right to left).
