About Derek
I love teaching and learning equally. And, I look forward to working with students to share my love of letters and art.
I am working artist living in Los Angeles, CA. I am a published poet, a songwriter represented by a recording label, an established exhibition curator, and a publisher of a performance art printed matter.
I have also published books and articles aimed at bringing about social and environmental change. I am currently teaching part-time as an Adjunct Professor of Liberal Studies at Los Angeles Film School.
I am most delighted and very comfortable working with artists and students from the most diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual identities and orientations, and cultures.

My teaching method emphasizes student exercises aimed at attaining a deeper understanding of the subject matter and any areas for improvement in that understanding. I focus on giving instruction aimed at different students' learning styles until we hit upon the right mix of approaches for each particular student.
For instance, I teach Creative Writing using personal journal, personal reflections on writing process, reading texts as a writer, discussion of literary theory and terms, best practices craft strategies, and self-critique and revision techniques.
I am best-suited to tutor students enrolled in all types of college, masters programs, and 3rd and 4th Years of High School (especially those who intend to go to College). I am a working artist and connected to the LA Art world and will incorporate my experiences into the teaching.
