About Tamlyn
I have completed 4 years of medical school. I completed Grade 12 with 9 distinctions. I continued to do well academically at the University of the Witwatersrand, even in Physics and Chemistry even though I did not do Physical Sciences in school. I just fell in love with Chemistry and enjoyed teaching it to students for the past 10 years at a Grade 10-12 level. I’ve also been teaching Mathematics for that time, but from Grades 4 to 12. I am now completing my Honours in Forensic Sciences and am a mother to a 3-year-old boy :)

About the lesson

Currently I am teaching in person or online, via Zoom, as preferred. When teaching on Zoom, I hold my phone camera towards paper, while writing notes and drawing diagrams or graphs relating to the topic, and the student writes/draws with me wherever they are. I believe that notes need to be visually stimulating for students to maintain interest while studying so I encourage the use of colour and pictures. While the process might sound passive, it isn’t because I ask frequent questions and often expect my student to finish the examples we are working through to test their understanding of the concept. At the beginning of lessons I also ask questions about the previous lessons’ content to serve as revision, a mental warm-up and a springboard into the lesson, and at the end of the lesson, I ask the student to summarise what we’ve covered. I encourage my students to ask any questions they may have and appreciate their feedback on what worked well in a lesson and what didn’t.
