About Ben
I’ve been a journalist for 20 years and during that time I’ve done almost everything - police reporting, beat reporting, politics, investigations. I’ve been the chief of staff in one of the country’s biggest newsrooms and the editor of a Sunday metropolitan newspaper. I wrote a nonfiction book that was picked up by a major international publisher.
I currently focus mostly on investigative work, including longform features and podcasts. During my career I’ve won a Walkley award (and been a finalist three times), and 12 state media awards in NSW, Queensland and the NT (including NT journalist of the year)
Most of what I can offer is practical experience. I’m probably not the person to advise on academic-focused journalism subjects. But I do have a deep understanding of the industry and what makes a great piece of journalism.

I offer practical advice, feedback and review of journalism work / assignments and industry-focused mentorship.
I’ve helped dozens of young journalists through the process of sourcing, pitching, researching, writing and refining their work. I can consult on practical journalism assignments, which might involve discussing / helping to define a practical approach at the outset, and later reviewing your work and suggesting edits.
I can advise and edit freelance summbmissions for students and early-career journalists seeking to meet practical requirements or get published in the industry.
I’ve been a mentor for the Walkley foundation’s mentorship program and performed a similar role within news organisations for journalists seeking to make their mark. During mentorship sessions we would discuss your career goals, industry expectations and review work.
