About Emily
I earned my PhD in Chemistry at MIT and later taught as a university professor, working with students from a wide range of backgrounds. I've also worked as a scientist in industry, including quality analysis at a brewery. There, spectroscopy was part of everyday work: beer bitterness is measured by UV absorbance at 275 nm, and color at 430 nm. I enjoy showing students that the techniques in their textbook are the same tools working chemists rely on. My goal is for you to leave not just prepared for your exam, but confident that you can reason through chemistry problems yourself.

I tutor upper-level chemistry online, specializing in inorganic chemistry and spectroscopy. That includes structure and bonding, symmetry and group theory, coordination chemistry, and interpreting IR, NMR, UV-vis, and mass spectra. Organic chemistry students often find structure determination from spectra the hardest part of the course, and I can help you build a systematic way to work through those problems.
Each lesson starts with what you're working on and where you're stuck. We go over the underlying ideas, work through examples together, and then you practice with less and less help from me. I'll ask you to explain your reasoning along the way, because being able to say why an answer is right is what lets you solve the next problem on your own.
Lessons are online, using a shared whiteboard, so we can sketch structures, orbitals, and spectra together in real time. Your first lesson is free, so we can figure out what you need and whether my approach works for you.
