About Steven
I am here to help foster a genuine love for music in my students. Whether it's music production, theory, saxophone, or flute that you want to focus on, a path tailored to what truly inspires you will lay the groundwork for our studies. Having been a professional gigging musician for 11 years, music producer with numerous released works, and passionate music lover with a Bachelor's degree in jazz studies, we will shape you into a more musical person with actual practical skills.

Our lessons will be tailored to your goals, interests, and musical background, with a focus on fostering a genuine love for music. Whether we dive into music theory, production, composition, improvisation, saxophone, or flute, you'll receive practical exercises and real-world applications that strengthen your understanding and give you tools you can immediately apply to your own music and practice.
If music production is your focus, you can expect to learn professional production techniques, recording and mixing fundamentals, sound design, arrangement, and a detailed breakdown of plugins and how they work. My goal is not only to show you what settings to use, but to help you understand why they work so you can confidently create the sound, quality, and vibe you're aiming for in your own productions.
A typical lesson includes reviewing previous material, addressing questions, introducing new concepts, and applying them through hands-on exercises or projects. Lessons are adapted to each student's pace and learning style.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect music theory, instrumental performance, and modern music production into one practical learning experience. Rather than relying on memorization alone, I focus on helping students develop their ears, creativity, and confidence so they can continue growing independently.
Lessons are suitable for beginners through advanced students, whether you're learning music for the first time, improving your instrumental skills, building a stronger understanding of theory, or creating your own music in Ableton Live.

Having worked with Stephen in numerous professional settings, I can say without a doubt that he has all the necessary qualifications and experience to effectively teach a wide range from beginners to advanced levels in music production. My time learning from him has been an invaluable use of my time in helping me, as a musician that wants to dabble in production, have a solid grasp on creating good mixes. I can say without a doubt that Stephen will assist you in whichever musical production problem you are facing.
I’ve worked alongside Steven as a colleague for two years, and he’s genuinely one of the clearest teachers I’ve come across. He doesn’t overcomplicate things; he just breaks production down into straightforward steps that actually stick. We recently worked through a messy Ableton Live session together, and instead of just taking over, he walked me through the routing and track setup until I could handle the signal chain on my own. If you want a tutor who explains things clearly and helps you actually understand the software, I’d highly recommend him.
I met Steven at LACM, where we studied and performed music together. Through countless sessions playing jazz standards, he inspired me to grow as a musician and always strive for excellence. Steven is an exceptional saxophonist, a thoughtful teacher, and someone with tremendous insight and perspective. I highly recommend him to any student looking for guidance, inspiration, and a deeper understanding of music.
Steven Griggs is my instructor for saxophone and songwriting, and I'd like to be honest and note that growing up with the saxophone, I was rejected many times and often put down by talented players to the point of wanting to forget the saxophone completely. However, what Steve brings to the table is patience and professionalism. Mr. Griggs has a way of finding your strengths and weaknesses and channeling it all into a lesson plan for success.
Patient, Understanding, Professional, Friendly, Patient.
I met Steven over 10 years ago through the LA jazz community. He has always been a very passionate musician and person. He’s always made it an effort to dive deeply into music technically, theoretically, and spiritually. He is also great at expressing himself and the things he has learned through conversations that are always very inspiring. I have no doubt that he is a great teacher who is great at connecting to his students.
Steven Griggs is a unique, creative and very resourceful musical artist. He’s encouraging, compassionate and easy to work with. We met through a mutual friend over 10 years ago and have worked together in a variety of professional settings over the years.
Steven and I have performed and recorded together many times in different musical groups. Steven has performed live and recorded tenor saxophone with my sixteen-piece big band SicNarf on multiple occasions. He is a fantastic woodwind player and specializes in the tenor saxophone and flute.
Steven has also released multiple original electronic albums and has a phenomenal ear for music production. I consider Steven to be an incredibly well rounded musician and I would highly recommend working with him to anyone looking to refine their musical abilities.
Steven Griggs was my first saxophone teacher. From the beginning he was always attentive, very patient, and very effective as a teacher. He’s an amazing enthusiastic educator with an open-minded view towards music; yet he had a very attentive teaching style that helped accelerate my progress. When I first met Steven I could barely play jazz saxophone, however after studying with him for only a year, I was admitted into a top jazz program with scholarship. I attribute a large portion of my admission to my lessons with Steven Griggs
