About Timothy
Hi! My name is Tim from Square Academy. I was born and raised in Singapore, came to Melbourne to study at The University of Melbourne and have been here ever since. I completed the Bachelor of Science (majoring in Zoology and Marine Biology) in 2 years with scores of 99 and 98 in several subjects and an average score over 90. During this time, I was fortunate enough to receive top student accolades in various subjects (including one for my elective studying Ancient Greek language!) as well as the Dean’s Honours Award.
I took a gap year after graduating, teaching myself Japanese and travelling across Japan. I returned to The University of Melbourne to complete my Honours Degree in Zoology for which I obtained another Dean’s Honours Award. This was also the year I accepted Christianity into my life.
I completed the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in Math (full marks), English (98th percentile) and Biology (99th percentile), and was to my knowledge the first Singaporean to be accepted into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, the top Veterinary College in the US. However, I made the difficult decision of declining the offer and instead worked as a Marine Biologist, a childhood dream of mine, before embarking on a Ph.D. studying emotions and cognition in zebrafish, and during this time I began teaching at the university. What started as a part time job turned into an unexpected passion, and I continued teaching students studying biomedicine as an Academic after completing my Ph.D.
After leaving the university, I taught Junior and Senior School English at Edcellent Education for 3 years, the last of which as the Head of Curriculum and Head of VCE, helping hundreds of students achieve their VCE and life goals, before teaching on my own.
Beyond these achievements, I believe that people are defined not only by their successes, but also by their hardships. Although we live in a world that values form over function, style over substance, I subscribe to the belief that,

Regardless of age, the most impactful teaching moments I shared with my students have never been about content I was ‘supposed’ to teach.
- It was when I questioned why my biomedicine students REALLY wanted to be doctors.
- It was when I shared the impact a homeless person had on my life.
- It was when I helped them realise that English, like every other subject, is part of the interwoven tapestry of reality, and studying its strands instead of the tapestry neglects so much of its beauty.
Having taught Junior School children through to graduate level students over the past decade, I believe that education is inherently interdisciplinary. I incorporate this philosophy into all my teaching to inspire creativity and excitement in my students, allowing them to make sense of the world while enjoying every minute of it.

VCE PROGRAM (Year 10-12)

Subjects in 2026: VCE Biology, Chemistry, General Maths, and Methods
This is an online program consisting of:
- Weekly 90-minute classes complete with interactive discussions, mindmaps, physical models, videos, on-screen annotations and more.
- Weekly 60-minute revision tutorials if you need additional assistance with content or schoolwork. (my students almost never need these, so students in need will get my undivided attention)
- Regular self-paced revision quizzes that consolidate your learning. You get immediate feedback and can even ask me questions during the quiz.
- A private workspace with me for you to upload schoolwork, ask your questions, and vent your frustrations outside of class.
- Access to Square Academy’s Study Hub — a warm, supportive community where my students can connect with one another and access all my English, Science and Maths resources.
- And most importantly, an accomplished and caring Mentor who will support you through the stresses of high school and equip you for life beyond Year 12.

WRITING ROOM (Year 9-10 English)
The Writing Room is an English extension class that produces critical thinkers and brilliant communicators. Each term, we focus on one of 4 areas:
- Speech writing and public speaking
- Text response and film analysis
- Creative writing
- Argument analysis
In addition, classes are filled with stimulating discussions about real-world ideas and events, because skilled communicators need equally nuanced ideas to communicate.
Motivated students will LOVE the Writing Room.

LEARNING LAB (Year 9-10 Maths/Science)
The Learning Lab is a Maths and Science extension class that stimulates creativity and a passion for STEAM. Each session, we discuss ideas, dive down rabbit holes and see where they take us.
In 2026, we will investigate the ‘Elements of Life’ — Water, Air, Earth, and Fire. Imagine tying the study of water to hydraulic systems, organic chemistry, ancient civilisations, organ function, energy production, marine biology and more!
Not only will your child make important connections with the broader world; this course will also enhance their creativity, critical thinking, and resilience, preparing them for both their further studies and career.
Duration — 90 minutes a week, 9 sessions a term
Grade — 9 to 10

CURIOSITY CLUB (Year 3-8 English/Maths/Science)
The Curiosity Club is a different way of learning.
Student-driven classes that develop their literacy, numeracy, critical thinking and creativity simultaneously.
Forget PowerPoint slides, worksheets, memorisation and tests — the Curiosity Club is for parents who believe that a lifelong passion for learning is the key to success and wish to instill the same values in their children.
Duration — 90 minutes a week, 9 sessions a term
Grade — 3 to 8
Class size — Limited to 8 students

MENTORSHIPS (Year 3-12 Individual classes)
Mentorships are exclusive private classes focused on your child's needs. In addition to mentoring them on their academic studies, I also act as their life coach, helping them overcome issues such as procrastination, anxiety, goal planning, lack of motivation and more.
Mentorships are what I believe ALL education should be: holistic, practical, and FUN. In my mentorships, my students tell ME what they want to learn. They take ownership over their education and I guide them accordingly. You'll be amazed at what your child is capable of when given wisdom of a good mentor and the freedom to explore.
Note: there is a waiting list for my private lessons.
