I begin the first session by setting an exercise from which I can analyse my student’s level of comprehension, written, spoken french as well as the usage of tenses.
Provided that learning a foreign language isn’t the easiest activity, I like to motivate my students by setting fun exercises which are engaging and informative. The activities can vary from talking about one’s ideal lifestyle, passion, future goals (whilst incorporating a good range of tenses, adjectives - synonyms, connectives) to playing mystery/ problem solving games. It is equally essential to include the french culture/ news as part of the teaching strategy so from time to time, exercises will involve watching a french movie or cartoon with subtitles, followed by a little assessment.
Oral exercises are also key and I do these by having relaxed conversations with my students, where I can challenge their pronunciation, intonation, ability to ask questions and understanding of tenses and time.
