About Léo

Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Léo.

After graduating in French Linguistics from the Sorbonne university in Paris, where I was able to learn in depth about the inner workings of my language, I realized that I wanted to dedicate myself entirely to teaching it, from my unique perspective as a language expert.

I have more than 8 years of experience in teaching French around the world. I speak French (native), Spanish and English, which allows me to have a closer communication with my students. Passionate about languages, I dedicate part of my free time to perfect my teaching methods and to offer the best possible experience to my students. Their satisfaction comes first and I hope to pass on my passion for the French language to you.

In my free time, I also enjoy making music and reading, whether it’s novels or books on health, science, or psychology. I also enjoy spending time in nature and exercise.

For me, patience and kindness are fundamental qualities of a good teacher, as well as maintaining a dynamic environment during classes. I care deeply about my students, and my main goal is for us to progress together as a team.

My methodology is based on conversation and playful activities, without having the feeling of “working.” I focus on understanding spoken French, which is different from written French, so that my students gain fluency and confidence quickly.

I combine lessons with flash cards  and spaced repetition. I also use the Comprehensible Input approach, which is based on the idea that we learn best when we understand words in context (with comprehensible stories for example).

I rely on methods validated by science, which also encourage high retention and rapid progress. The old methods of learning, where grammar was memorized by heart, are a bit outdated now. They don’t really help you develop practical language skills.

I tailor my lessons to the goals and needs of each individual. For example: • Preparation for official exams (DELF, DALF, TCF…) • Integration into a job where French is required • Practicing French as a hobby • Improving pronunciation • Teaching children… etc. Everything is personalized.

I offer a free class so you can try my teaching method, set goals, and get to know each other. I hope to see you soon!

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am fluent in French because it is my mother tongue. French is a complex language, which means that even some French people don't master it completely. I have had an interest in literature since I was a child, so I have always mastered the language naturally.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Charles Aznavour embodies the best of French culture and is a historical figure in the field of music. He was a singer, composer, actor and writer. Through his vision of life, his love of Paris and his humor, he was an ambassador to the world of a certain French spirit. For all French people and for many others, he was that reassuring figure, a pillar to which we could always cling.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I absolutely love the humor and elegance of 70s France, in comedy films like “La grande vadrouille” the French were never vulgar, always elegant in the way they made us laugh, with expressions like: “tout de même! mais enfin!” and many facial expressions and onomatopoeia very characteristic of the French.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

To learn French is above all to open yourself to a new culture and a new way of thinking. It means discovering the literature, songs and films that have lulled the French to sleep, with their humor and elegance, the emotions they convey and their poetry, so special and unique. It means cultivating an art of living, an art of thinking and speaking. Apart from the personal aspect, French is spoken by more than 275 million people worldwide, making it one of the most widely spoken languages on the planet.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

I would say that the main difficulty with the language is getting to understand and pronounce the different types of sounds, especially the nasal vowels. And understanding that what is written is different from what is heard. Working on listening and pronunciation, as well as understanding how French is read, provides a very solid foundation on which to advance in learning French.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I helped a student who was the director of an art gallery in Key West, to converse with the president of UNESCO and the French ambassador in Cuba about integrating Key West as a UNESCO Creative City. We prepared her conversational skills and arguments together, and I wrote a letter in French that she sent to the UNESCO president before the meeting. It was a very interesting and enriching experience!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

The longest trip has been to Spain. I was in Barcelona for a year to finish my literature studies at the University of Barcelona. There I discovered the Catalan and Spanish culture. Now I have been living in Madrid for 2 years. I have been able to discover the Spanish culture in depth and to learn the language well. Apart from that my biggest trip was to Florida, in the United States, to live with a host family for a month. It helped me to improve my English.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

My real strength is empathy and my passion for what I do. I want to transmit my passion for the French language in a gentle way. I believe I have the ability to find the 20% of effort that will give you 80% of results, so I concentrate on the essentials of the rules in order to be able to speak as quickly as possible. What gives me most pleasure is to see my students happy and feel that they are progressing in the language.
