About Wenting
Hello! I’m Wenting, a native Mandarin and Shanghainese speaker from Shanghai, now based in Auckland.
I am a qualified language teacher with more than seven years of experience teaching adults and children in online, bilingual and classroom settings. I hold a Master of Education in Teaching and Learning Languages with Distinction, a Bachelor’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and the CTCSOL certificate.
I offer personalised Mandarin and Shanghainese lessons for all levels. Whether you want to improve everyday conversation, pronunciation, travel or workplace Chinese, connect with your heritage, or communicate with a Chinese-speaking partner and family, I will design lessons around your real goals.
My lessons are practical, interactive and encouraging. We may use role-plays, stories, pictures, cultural materials and real-life situations so that you can learn Chinese that you will actually use.
You are always welcome to ask questions, make mistakes and learn at your own pace. My goal is to help you speak with greater confidence, understand the culture behind the language and enjoy making steady progress.

My Mandarin and Shanghainese lessons are designed around one simple question: what would you like to be able to do with Chinese in real life?
You may want to have everyday conversations, improve your pronunciation, prepare for travel or work, communicate with your partner’s family, reconnect with your Chinese or Shanghainese heritage, or help your child develop confidence in Chinese. Whatever your goal is, I will create lessons that are relevant to your life, level and interests.
A typical 60-minute lesson includes guided speaking, listening, useful vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar taught naturally in context. We may practise through role-plays, stories, pictures, games, videos and authentic materials such as menus, messages and real-life situations.
I provide clear explanations, supportive correction and plenty of opportunities to practise, so you can make mistakes safely and gradually speak with more confidence. I also review your progress regularly and adapt the content, pace and teaching strategies as your needs change.
I hold a Master of Education in Teaching and Learning Languages with Distinction and have extensive experience teaching adults and children in online, bilingual and classroom settings. My lessons are suitable for complete beginners to upper-intermediate learners, including heritage speakers and students looking for practical, personalised Mandarin or Shanghainese support.
You will not simply memorise isolated words and grammar rules. You will learn how to use Chinese to express yourself, connect with people and take part in conversations that genuinely matter to you.

Perfect! I absolutely recommend Wenting as a language teacher. She is engaging and friendly, she is clear in her instructions and very encouraging - capable of both telling me when I get things right and correcting my mistakes. She prepares detailed lessons for each class which build on vocabulary I learned in the previous weeks, and she sends me a copy of the slides and an audio recording of the content of that lesson afterwards, which I can use to practice during the week. It's not easy to find a Shanghainese teacher and I have tried a few schools / online apps previously, and none of them compare to how well I am learning with Wenting as my teacher.
