I have been teaching online and in-person for years and I have specific teaching strategies to engage my students. Each lesson includes varied activities to build their knowledge of the Italian language and constantly improve their reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills. I adopt the communicative approach, which means that during the lessons I speak Italian as much as I can, but I switch to English every time it is needed, especially when I explain the grammar. Each lesson is carefully planned, including PowerPoints that explain the grammar in English to help students understand thoroughly the topic of the lesson. Special attention is given to learning the vocabulary and to conversation activities to speak the language fluently in every situation. Students are given homework to consolidate what they have learnt.

One of the key aspects of my teaching style is my dedication to helping students effectively convey meaning in Italian. Teaching a language goes beyond simply explaining grammar rules. it’s about ensuring students can apply those rules in meaningful, real-world communication. For instance, while the English "present perfect" shares a similar structure with the Italian "passato prossimo," the two tenses are used in distinctly different ways. It is crucial for students to grasp how to express meaning naturally, avoiding literal translations that often result in errors and hinder clear communication. With my native-level fluency and thorough knowledge of both English and Italian grammar, I am well-equipped to guide students from beginner to advanced levels, ensuring a deep and comprehensive understanding of the Italian language and culture.

I offer a wide range of courses focusing on business, tourism, social sciences, fashion, history of art, or general language. Let me know your goals and I will tailor a course specifically to your needs.

Find out more about Professor Federica

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Italian fluently because I am a native speaker.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

If I had to choose a historical character, I would name Dante Alighieri. I wish I had known him; he probably spoke with the typical, lovely, Tuscan gorgia. A fictional character would be Jep Gambardella, the disillusioned writer of the awarded Italian movie "La grande bellezza". I love the Italian he speaks, a very high register (educated and refined) with a thick accent from Naples.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I like dialects, I find them so amusing and incredibly expressive. They represent the soul of the Italian language, our identity.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Italian is the language of fashion, art, delicious food, and breathtaking views. Whether you are a fashion student attending shows in Milan, an art lover visiting our beautiful 'open-air museum' in Rome, or just want to spend an unforgettable summer in Tuscany, you should be able to speak the language.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Italian is a language with a high degree of inflexion, which is why it is necessary to learn grammar topics step by step by studying and practicing. Honing one's speaking skills is also paramount, the communicative approach helps students learn new words, and get used to the pronunciation and the fluency of real-life conversations.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I started lessons at university, I did not understand anything since the professors spoke English and Spanish (the languages that I was studying). After a while, this full immersion helped me improve considerably!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I moved to London soon after graduating. I had been studying English for years but living in an English-speaker country gave me that native-speaker fluency. Students should always strive to speak the language as much as they can by studying in groups and travelling a lot.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Thorough knowledge of Italian grammar, vocabulary, and the different Italian registers; lifelong training to find new and effective teaching strategies; 10 years' experience with individual students and at school; ability to create teaching plans based on students' needs, and, last but not least, a genuine love for my job: "choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."
