About Tommy
Hi! My name is Tommy, I am 21 years old and I live in Auckland.
I have been playing chess since I was 8, joining my school team and attending inter-school tournaments. When school became more time consuming I stopped spending as much time playing chess, but played whenever I could. I strongly believe in finding a good tutor, but more importantly the right tutor for yourself; it is a very key aspect to improvement. Chess is a game to be enjoyed with family, friends, or a stranger! It is a universal language and is a fascinating game to keep the mind busy with. It can be played in many different ways and I believe it should be done so in a way that is fun and exciting for yourself. Enjoyment is the key! I think lessons should be approached with a fun aspect to them, while also being well structured and productive.

About the lesson

- Lessons will be planned out and will vary based on skill level, discussing different opening repertoires and general tactics/principles.
- We will be discussing your goals and what you want to get out of our sessions
- Lesson times can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on what works for you
- Different openings will be suggested based on skill level/play style of a student, with key ideas and strategies of the opening being discussed.
- Games played will be reviewed and talked through, using a chess engine that analyses each move with pinpoint accuracy. I pay for this engine monthly myself :)
- Practice games will be played each session and will be reviewed and improved on each time
- Experience with chess tournaments for all ages which can be one of the many goals for our sessions. Competing in a tournament is a great way to practice what you learn and meet people with an interest for chess
I am a polytechnic graduate of an electrician pre-trade course, and I now run a maintenance business. I have lots of experience teaching chess and music to kids/family members
Lessons are for all ages! Chess is a beautiful and fun game that keeps the mind pondering. You too may find yourself awake at night thinking about it
