About Erik

Online only · Moscow time (UTC+3) · lessons in English or Russian

My name is Erik Markovskii. I studied darbuka with Turkish masters Misirli Ahmet and Berkant Çakıcı, and I've been teaching hand percussion for more than 15 years — over 1,000 students, adults and children.

I teach darbuka the way it's played in Turkish and Arabic music: clean sound, relaxed hands and rhythms you can really use with other musicians.

Background: a degree in psychology and education, 20 years on stage, and theatre music nominated for the Golden Mask, Russia's national theatre award (Best Composer).

About the lesson

Who it's for:
• Complete beginners
• Children from 7
• Players who want to go deeper into Turkish and Arabic styles

What we work on:
• Darbuka sounds: doum, tek and ka — clean and relaxed
• Core rhythms: maqsum, baladi, saidi, malfuf and the 9/8 karsilama
• Rolls, ornaments and your first solos
• Playing along with real music
• Accompanying songs, dancers and other musicians

Format: individual 60-minute lessons on Zoom. I'll help you choose your first darbuka if you need one.

Free first lesson — 30 minutes. We'll play together, and you'll leave with exercises you can practise on your own.
