About Lisa
Hi! Thanks so much for taking a look at my profile. My name is Lisa and I'm a 27-year-old master's graduate. I grew up in the Netherlands (right outside of Amsterdam) and in the U.S. (Boston suburbs). I was raised in both countries and I'm a native Dutch and English speaker. I completed my undergraduate degree at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with a study abroad semester at the University of Edinburgh. I went on to get my Master's Degree in Psychology at the University of London.
My teaching experience is extensive and includes the following roles:
- French teacher at an elementary school in Ghana (on a volunteer program the summer before college)
- ESL tutor at an AmeriCorps-funded immigrant and refugee center in Minneapolis (this was a volunteer position I did for two years during college), where I also assisted clients with citizenship test preparation and interview strategies
- English tutor for elementary school kids at a non-profit for Native American families in Minneapolis (three-month volunteer role during college)
- Teaching Assistant at a school for children's with autism in Saint Paul (one-year internship during college)
- Dutch tutor in London (I started my own tutoring business last year and this is still an ongoing side project)
A bit more about me: I have always loved to write and I'm trying to slowly build a career in journalism. I'm also the co-founder and managing editor at Lamplight, a new London-based arts and culture magazine. I'm juggling quite a few side projects and hoping to grow my tutoring business to allow me to continue exploring these creative avenues. I had a successful Dutch tutoring business in London and now I'm hoping to expand to ESL students in the States.

I would describe my teaching style as enthusiastic, warm, and highly tailored to each student. I have tutored students with a range of proficiencies and of various ages. First, I always try to get a sense of where you are at in terms of ability, then ask what you are hoping to get out of tutoring sessions (are you trying to learn/develop the language for academic purposes, professional purposes, etc.?), and make a teaching plan together. I like the teaching experience to be a collaborative one, in order to ensure your are happy with the direction we are going in. (Also, I want to make sure it's a fun experience for you, as this is such an important part of language learning!)
I offer the following types of classes:
- Pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary building
- Reading comprehension
- Writing skills
- Interview preparation
- Citizenship test preparation
- A combination of any of the above
My first class (30 minutes) is always free.
