About Lionel

I started practicing yoga 19 years ago and I am a certified yoga instructor with the RYT200 certificate issued by Yoga Alliance. For the past 11 years, I taught/have been teaching in several local gyms (Chi Fitness, MUV FIT), Yoga studios (Jal Yoga, Surya yoga, Inspired Yoga, mYoga, Yoga The One That I Want & etc), Corporate offices (Maybank, KLSE, Bonuslink, KSK Group, APEX & etc) and also private classes. The maximum number of students that I have in my class was 40, with all ages ranging from 18 to 70 years old. Many students have reverted to me that their lower back pain, knee pain, and other chronic pain have been reduced after attending my classes. Also, some with depression and anxiety have benefited from my classes.

I conduct several types of yoga classes namely Yin Yang Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Yin Yoga, Gentle Yoga, and Power Yoga to local gyms, yoga studios & corporate offices. I also conduct private classes. Besides, I do organize Charity Yoga and Yoga Retreats from time to time. My teaching style is very much influenced and inspired by Anusara yoga style, which emphasizes "Universal Principles of Alignment" as the focal point of its practice. I dedicated a lot of my time to understanding and perfecting alignment in asanas. I believe with this deeper understanding, we will be able to experience the full benefits of the asanas. Human anatomy is also a key focus in my teaching. The ability to identify the connection between muscles, joints, and spine while performing asanas will help individuals to produce optimal muscle performance whilst preventing injuries. Apart from that, I'm also an avid believer in Yin Yoga. The slow-paced Yin Yoga calms and allows the asanas to go deeper into the body's connective tissues. I believe it's important to have balance by practicing both Yin and Yang Yoga because it creates a strong and flexible body as well as a calm mind.

  • What age did you start practiving Yoga? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.

I started practicing yoga since 2006, when I didn't have much body flexibility, it was quite embarrassing when I was the only one who couldn't touch my fingertips to the floor back then. However, I didn't give up, with my passion in yoga, and the determination of getting more flexible, I continued my practice since then.
  • What are your favourite Yogas; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a yoga style that you'd still like to discover?

In terms of yoga, I have tried many types of yoga, namely : Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Yin Yoga, Aerial Yoga, Chair Yoga and etc. I must say my favourite is Yin Yang Yoga, which it combines both active and passive stretching, which allows us to strike a balance between both Yin & Yang.
  • What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue Yoga?

What motivates me to continue with yoga is that the outer and inner change that it can bring to us, when you get the benefits from the practice, you tend to continue, not just physically but also mentally.
  • Do you have a teaching achievement that you're particularly proud of?

The achievement that I am proud of is when students told me their lower back pain has reduced after practicing yoga with me, or even they could sleep better now as compared to before practising yoga.
  • How have your achievements and challenges made you a better Yoga teacher?

Understanding students body issue makes me think of how can I help to reduce their pain or even overcome the obstacle, sometimes they told me some syndromes that I have never heard before, then I would try to understand more about this syndromes by doing some research, and came out with some modification to meet their needs.
  • If you had to go for a jog with a famous yoga master, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?

If I were to meet Dylan Werner in person, I would want to ask him : As a very famous male yoga master, what is your ultimate goal?
  • How do you help people stay motivated?

I always tell my students to be patient with themselves, changes will not happen overnight, just compare themselves with their 1st day of practising yoga, I am sure they can see the improvement even if it is not too significant, also practising yoga is not just an physical exercise, it also helps me to calm ourselves and brings us inner peace.
  • What makes you a Superprof in Yoga?

I always believe that everyone is different, and I am quite observant about students' conditions, I don't believe 1 method for everyone, hence I always give options to my students. Even our conditions can be different from days to days, so it is ok if you are not performing as good as yesterday. I guess lecturing the ideas about "everyone is different", "everyday is different", "accepting themselves as who they are", or even help them to "find themselves" throughout the practice, these are all very important.
