About Josh
Hello! My name is Joshua and I a 22-year-old English Graduate from the University of Oxford. Having completed my undergraduate studies, I shifted into creative writing, and am currently attending the University of Montana’s Creative Writing Program under the prestigious Truman Capote scholarship. At Montana, I spend my time split between writing and continued study of English literature – a focus on academics as well as creative work that the university prides itself on. I am able to offer tutoring in English Literature up the undergraduate level, and writer’s-workshop style sessions on creative work at any level. Intertwining my study with my writing has helped me discover more passion for both, and I hope to pass on that passion in whatever field you choose to learn with me.

I am happy to work with both GCSE and A Level students in English Literature and language, and providing sessions ranging from covering exam content to refining essays for top marks. I tailor my sessions to a student’s specific goals and learning style, aiming to provide each student with an education tailored to them. This can include close reading passages of an assigned text, coming up with essay plans for practice questions together, or assistance on the level of sentence craft. I think it is particularly important to ensure students can convey their thoughts clearly and confidently, as this is what gives them an advantage when it comes to university admissions, and in eventually navigating the world of work. In my creative writing sessions, I aim to help students first come up with an idea of what they are writing towards. This will done by looking at the work of other writers, as well as looking at different critical texts on craft. Then we begin the process of finding our voice, I help students achieve this through the use of structured prompts and feedback on writing assignments. As students’ progress, we can look at more tricky writing samples, and get into the weeds of the specific tools of fiction – POV, narrative, character – with the aim of further developing their writerly voice. I am also able to provide feedback writers on pieces students are trying to submit to journals and competitions, as well as sessions aiming to demystify these processes. I can offer support with admissions to either Oxbridge or Creative Writing programmes. With Oxbridge, this takes the form of mock interviews, help writing a personal statement, and drawing on my own expertise to provide a roadmap for the process. In the field of creative writing, I can help tune up manuscripts, and even work with students trying to apply to MFA programs in America, guiding them through the visa process and giving them advice on what to expect abroad. Typical lessons are one hour long and can be scheduled as often as the student requires. I provide ongoing feedback, along with homework and quizzes, to support learning outside of lessons.

Josh is a brilliant scholar; he has been the most valuable resource in my graduate studies. Besides being an insightful and innovative thinker, he’s a strong writer with an eye for revision, a preternatural talent for intertextual synthesis, and a sense of humor that can carry a conversation (or a term paper). He’s a true Renaissance man, and I recommend him wholly as an educator and thought partner.
