About Tom
I have a first in maths from Oxford (MMath) and integrate this into a holistic approach to learning and well-being. I find that it is very important to create an environment in which the student is comfortable expressing themselves freely and enjoying their learning. This creates a solid platform for a deeper and more creative approach to the subject and learning generally. Above all, it is beneficial to adapt to the needs of each individual student to help them reach their particular goals, both subject-related and in other ways, such as confidence or anything else that they may be.
Current and former maths students range from Year 1 up to university level and I also have a broad range of general experience: I have tutored and taught in various settings in the UK, Nepal and Spain (in mainstream schools and as a teaching assistant in various types of special schools; as a rowing coach; and as an English as a Foreign Language teacher). I have also done a broad selection of other work, including as a lawyer at a leading city law firm and researcher on business ethics. I enjoy teaching students at a range of abilities, from those struggling with number bonds and times tables at primary level, to those taking GCSE and A level or undertaking scholarship or maths competition work. I am well-placed to help adult-learners with maths aptitude tests. I have extensive experience in teaching primary maths and this experience working towards understanding and intuition for the fundamentals of maths also means that I am able to ensure that students at later levels have solid mathematical foundations in place. In my teaching, I emphasise general approaches such as developing pattern spotting; how best to interpret, understand and solve worded questions; how working can be used to best effect and other such techniques.
The areas of maths I particularly specialise in include:
- all forms of confidence boosting in maths
- all primary level maths
- GCSE and Additional Mathematics (GCSE)
- A level
- scholarship entry
- work towards maths competitions
- aptitude tests
Please get in touch to discuss what it is that you are looking for and how I can help.

Maths tutor in London. I teach almost all of my lessons online, generally by Zoom. I encourage students to use an iPad with pen, or a tablet (e.g. Wacom or XP-pen), so that we can share a whiteboard during lessons and I can see working out as it is done and be 'inside' each student's thought processes.

Perfect! Tom was great, my son loved his lesson and will be taking regular tutoring for gcse math's with Tom.
Perfect! Tom is an excellent maths tutor - patient, clear and thorough in his explanations. He was always generous with his support and advice - a really nice man who cared about the welfare of his students. Our son achieved the top grade - a 9 - in a subject that he did not initially have any confidence in. We thoroughly recommend Tom.
Perfect! Tom teaches to my 10 year old gifted son for three years. Tom is an amazing teacher, he knows how to stretch young minds with different strategies and tools while keeping them super engaged and interested. My son absolutely loves sessions with Tom.
Perfect! Tom is prepared, professional and responsive. Our son enjoyed his first lesson with him, and is looking forward to next lesson.

We contacted Tom to help improve my son's confidence in Maths in preparation for the 11+ exams. Tom's passion for the subject, dedication, professional and caring approach has not only improved and bought out the best in my son's performance but has also given him an enjoyment for the subject which goes beyond the exams. He really enjoys the lessons with Tom, so much so that he looks forward to them. Tom is an exceptional tutor who knows how to bring out the best in a pupil whilst adopting a caring, positive and thorough approach. We cannot recommend him highly enough.

Perfect! Superb tutor and person
Tom is an excellent and highly qualified tutor. He played a huge part in the advancement of my teenage sons achievement at GCSE. This was not an easy task. On engaging Tom, my son was being scored in exam cycles and mocks at just Grade 1. He was really struggling to make sense of the syllabus. From the beginning, Tom differentiated himself by interviewing me to understand the child’s history including motivation and known impediments. His early tutorials, both in-person and video remote were systematic, using continuous assessment and method adaptation based on my sons unique learning needs. Later, Tom took time to co-ordinate his approach with my sons school teacher in a complementary way. The outcome of his dedication was that my son passed (4) his Maths GCSE. This was a huge success given the starting point and prior struggles. This achievement has really contributed to my sons confidence beyond Maths as he proceeds to A-Levels. Toms dedication to the students success is apparent. His integrity and friendly disposition grew the trust of both parent and student.

Tom helped my daughter move up two grades in Maths GCSE in the last two terms of Year 11 when time was running out. He was calm, professional and methodical, exactly what she needed to get a higher grade than she hoped for!

Tom was my 7-year-old son’s math tutor. Tom is a friendly and professional tutor, who was always well prepared for his lessons. He helped my son for 7+ King's College exam and my son passed the exam after a very limited time preparation.
I highly recommend Tom for anyone who is looking for help in Math.

TOm has been a wonderful tutor for our son. Seb was struggling with some aspects of maths so we decided to see if a tutor could help. Tom was amazing. He made our son feel completely at ease and much more confident. Seb actually looked forwards to the lessons and he has now completely caught up at school.
I could not recommend Tom highly enough.

Tom is an outstanding tutor, he is dedicated, engaged and patient. Our daughter genuinely enjoys his lessons and eagerly looks forward to each class. His classes are always stimulating and thoughtfully prepared, with enriching materials that keep learning both enjoyable and effective. Tom has an exceptional ability to quickly identify our daughter’s strengths and areas for improvement and he tailors his teaching to help her thrive. His impact on her progress has been truly remarkable and we are deeply grateful to have found him.
Tom has completely transformed the way my son Reyan approaches mathematics. Each session is engaging and thoughtfully planned, pushing Reyan to think critically and aim higher. What stands out is how Tom balances challenge and encouragement—he never settles for “good enough” and always inspires Reyan to take that extra step.
Reyan genuinely looks forward to his sessions every week, which says everything about the positive impact Tom has had. His approach has sparked real curiosity and confidence in Reyan’s learning, and we couldn’t be more grateful.Tom Linton worked with our 12-year-old son Julian in preparation for a high profile senior school scholarship. Tom is highly experienced with the format and demands of scholarship papers, which allowed for focused, targeted preparation. His calm, structured approach helped build confidence and sharpen our son’s problem-solving skills. His impact was immediate and exceptional. What stood out most was the effect Tom had on Julian’s motivation — he genuinely looked forward to each session, and we have rarely seen him so fired up and intrinsically motivated about progressing in a subject. We have worked with several tutors over the years, but none had such a rapid positive impact. We recommend Tom without hesitation.
Tom is an exceptionally effective tutor. He tutored our son for the 11+/13+ exams for the most competitive schools with a 100% success rate. He adapted to the demands of the different entry tests, was flexible in the way he worked, and critically has made maths a joy for our son. His professional and patient approach combined with high expectations worked well for our son.
Tom has worked with my son to extend and challenge him over the holidays. My son is a bright student with maths as a strength and our ask for Tom was to extend him beyond what was being taught at school and to help him prepare for transitioning to a much more academic school. Tom took time to understand my son’s strengths and learning style, chose papers and problem sets that would systematically extend his mathematical knowledge and give him the confidence to succeed in his new school and in UKMT challenges. He has formed a great partnership with my son which has been very beneficial for him.
We asked Tom, an old friend, to tutor our son (aged 12). He was highly professional and methodical in his approach. Tom is extremely well qualified and brought the best out of our son, who already quite liked maths but was short on confidence in the early stages of secondary school. Our son now says maths is his favourite subject and Tom’s tutoring was instrumental in getting him there.
Tom has taught both of my children over the last few years (for 10+ and 11+) and has been a fantastic teacher. He really helped them improve their maths and both say he is really great at explaining things they found tricky. I would highly recommend him!
Teachers like Tom are extremely rare these days, especially if you want your child to think mathematics. We've been with Tom for more than a year and I highly recommend Tom for turning my 8 year old into a junior mathematician he is now at 9. My son has often surprised me with the variety of ways one can solve a problem and this is purely down to Tom who has highly influenced his thinking style and preparing for the unprepared type of questions. I am happy to share that my son has been offered a place at one of London's top independent schools with Tom's guidance and if you are looking for support in maths at any year group, then don't look further. You can completely depend on Tom for anything under maths. We particularly liked the variety of problems he comes up with and the curation of these problems so specific for the child is what always impressed me. He brings in depth in understanding concepts without any limits to age or year group. We've had a fantastic experience so far and we are now looking for another year with him. On the personal side, he comes across as a lovely person to talk to and has always given his time to understand our ideas and potential plans for our son offline on emails and as well on phone.
Tom has tutored my son Sam in maths for the last six months, initially in the lead-up to his National 5 maths (the Scottish equivalent to English GCSE) and now for Maths Higher (the Scottish equivalent to AS Level).
Tom helped Sam improve from a D grade in his Nat 5 maths prelim to an A grade in his actual Nat 5. Tom's support and encouragement also led to Sam choosing to study maths for Higher. Sam enjoys his sessions with Tom and willingly continues them in the holidays, and maths has become his favourite subject.
Tom provides excellent feedback to Sam and helps him understand maths problems that he has found thoroughly confusing in the classroom. He is thoughtful and non-judgemental and knows the material inside out. I can't imagine a better tutor for my son.Tom Linton has been tutoring my daughter Maths to prepare her for 16+ exams of King’s College School Wimbledon and Sevenoaks School. Tom is an exceptional tutor with real passion in teaching with a customised approach for his students. He takes the time to understand the strengths and development needs of his students diligently and help them to achieve their goals with great care. He regularly gives very valuable and actionable feedback for continous improvement. Thanks to Tom, my daughter has got acceptance from both schools (one with academic scholarship). Thank you so much Tom!
Tom has been amazing. He tutored my daughter in Alevel Maths over the summer, increasing her confidence and improving her grades significantly. Tom has an excellent teaching style, my daughter finds him really engaging and looks forward to her lesson. He takes time after lessons to find and set targeted exercises and exam questions for practice, before the next lesson. He is friendly, patient and supportive. We would highly recommend him.
As a parent, I can feel that Mr Linton worked very hard to help my daughter reach her goal. He prepared lots of resources that are very useful and suitable for her level. The tutor tried hard to motivate her and after the summer tutorial, my daughter feels confident in the study of maths.
Tom tutored my daughter with weekly classes throughout the final year of her maths GCSE as she was struggling with the subject. She studied with him in both face to face and Zoom lessons with both types of learning suiting her needs. Tom was reliable, patient and punctual through the year and my daughter responded well to his teaching style. I would highly recommend Tom.
Tom is a fantastic tutor. He helped my child for 3-4 weeks to prepare for an unexpected test from school (for the purpose of A-level grade) at very short notice and he was extremely accommodating and offered a lot of help during this short space of time. He was comprehensive and efficient in his lessons. Furthermore, in addition to the scheduled lessons, he emailed my child almost every day to ensure questions in homework were answered quickly. We were extremely grateful for his assistance.
Tom is a great math tutor and he helped our son to be admitted by one of the top London independent schools at 10+ in where they only accepted 6 boys...
We knew that our son was talented in maths but we needed a structured plan and expert view on what he needs to do exactly for the preparation of the exams. Throughout our 1 year of tutoring together, in a very structured manner, without exhausting ourselves, we achieved what we aimed for. As a working mother with little contribution to my son’s study, I trusted in Tom’s experience and guidance. The best part is that my son enjoyed every lesson and the content has always been progressive.
Thanks to Tom for being a key contributor in our success...Tom has tutored my children in mathematics for several months, including
guiding my son to success in what is arguably the most difficult academic
scholarship to obtain at age 13+. Tom is an extremely diligent, patient
and thoughtful Maths tutor. He is able to provide a truly bespoke service
whether this is preparing for the lateral thinking required in the harder
13+ scholarship papers, or the more difficult questions in the GCSE
syllabus that must be tackled with confidence to obtain a Grade 9. Tom has
always been punctual and generous with his time. He plans each lesson in
advance, gives detailed feedback and is always responsive to questions by
email or in-person. In summary, I would recommend Tom unreservedly as a
Maths tutor, particularly for those students who are aiming for the very
highest levels of achievement for their age.Tom has taught my son for slightly over a year.m now and during that period I’ve seen my sons maths ability go from strength to strength and his confidence in the subject has also enjoyed a huge boost which was also noted by his teachers at school. I would highly recommend Tom, his teaching approach zeros in on the subject areas that challenge the students, addresses their concerns and then exposes them to a variety of challenging topics so that the students not only cope well in school but rather find themselves ahead of their classmates.
I highly recommend Tom as a tutor. He has taught my son for almost two years now, both in KS2 maths and in prep for the 11 plus exams. My son really struggled with maths at the outset of his lessons with Tom (he has mild dyslexia), but the work he has done with him has been transformative. He now says he enjoys maths and has made significant progresss in his understanding. He also secured a place at a selective school which felt like an unreachable goal when he first started with Tom. Tom has a very caring style and my son says he explains concepts really clearly. From my perspective I found Tom very easy to communicate with and he has made me feel confident that my son has real support in his learning. I wish I had had a maths tutor like Tom!
Tom is professional, approachable, thoughtful and knowledgeable. His teaching style enabled our son, in just a few weeks, to learn to conquer exam nerves and timing issues and acquire the necessary tools to tackle tricky questions. This in turn, led to him achieving the top grade at IGCSE.
Tom tutored my daughter for about a year preparing her for 11+ exams (South West London independant schools). She used to attend a state primary school and therefore needed some support in studying the curriculum in greater depth and giving her the confidence and "technique" to solve more complicated problems and puzzles that often come up in exam papers. She passed her exams with flying colours, including London's most selective girls' school and its "notoriously challenging" 3-parts maths paper. She even scored 100% in one maths paper at another school which was mentioned in the offer letter. Once she had mastered the curriculum, Tom focused the work on the most challenging papers and workbooks. This, added to his very methodic approach to problems, helped her achieve those results. Last, Tom is very reliable and good at giving feedback, positive but also negative. I would recommend him highly.
Maths has gone from being my son’s least favourite subject to his favourite subject at school!
We first approached Tom to prepare my son to sit an 8+ entrance exam for a top London school. Tom is very knowledgeable and very quickly grasped my sons weaknesses and focussed on strengthening his basic understanding of the principles of maths before progressing to other topics in the curriculum. My son has greatly benefitted from the lessons with Tom and has gone from being in the bottom set to being in the top set in his year. As we approached the exams, Tom focussed more on exam techniques and my son felt prepared on the day of the exams. Tom has always been prepared for each lesson and has made maths fun! We would highly recommend Tom to anyone!Tom has been teaching my daughter, 9, for almost a year now. She is an August child at an academic prep school and whilst bright she has struggled with the very challenging maths curriculum. Her relationship with maths had deteriorated so far that she refused to engage with lessons, homework was fraught with tears and tantrums and she was showing signs of significant anxiety.. Tom has brought enormous emotional intelligence to his tutoring of her. His kind manner coupled with firm boundaries is a winning combination. His patience is extraordinary and he is teaching her the tools she needs to approach independent learning and working as well as simply the maths itself.
I cannot recommend him highly enough.Tom is an excellent teacher and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone - whether they excel at maths or whether they find it difficult . He has been tutoring my children, now aged 10 and 13, for more than three years. He first came to us to help my daughter who struggles with maths and has been unfailingly patient and helped increase her confidence as well as her understanding. My son enjoys maths and Tom has been able to set him challenging work to keep him interested for the last few years. He has also supported him in preparing for his 11 plus deferred entry.
My son has Asperger's and suffers a great deal of anxiety about all aspects of school. Tom has taught him the whole of the AS maths syllabus in super quick time and has given much a great level of confidence in the subject. Highly recommended
We have used Tom for our son's maths tutoring, who is currently in Year 7 of a top-50 selective school, for the past year. This is the most recent school report from our son's maths teacher:
What a fabulous year so far! Early in Michaelmas term he was prone to rushing through exercises and he made a few too many silly mistakes. His first test score of 62% was respectable enough, but indicated that some of the basics needed work. However, since then he has really kicked on, and largely due to an exemplary attitude in class he has climbed right to the top of the set. Recent test results of 83% and 86% reflect the progress he has made. As well as written work of a very high quality, I am even more impressed by the excellent contribution he makes within lessons, where he is always willing to offer answers or ask questions. He also works hard on bonus material and challenge preps. This has been a successful year - congratulations!
Our son continues to enjoy his maths lessons with Tom and looks forward to them. I suspect that his "exemplary attitude" in class has been a result of Tom's teaching and dedication in creating the spark of interest in this subject. We have since also added our younger son and older daughter to Tom's list of tutees, and they are also going from strength to strength.I'm a masters student studying Business Intelligence and one of my modules involved statistics which I've never done before. I was having a lot of difficulties trying to understand what to do. Tom helped me so much within 2-3 weeks before my exam. He went through every topic I was having difficulty with step by step. I was extremely impressed with the quality of teaching. Also, Tom was very organised and conscientious. I would recommend him to anyone who needs helps in statistics or any other subject. Tom's tutoring is reflected through my results from the statistics exam in which I got 94%. Thank you so much Tom!
Tom has been teaching my son the 11+ onwards maths curriculum for the past four months. My son's maths performance has gone from the lower end of the class (averaging 40-odd% in year 5) to the top (class average in tests 88%, son's personal average 99%)! He finished year 6 a couple of marks off level 6b for this subject. Tom is calm, steady and well prepared at every lesson. Furthermore, my son not only loves his lessons but has even come to see Tom as his friend, which I never imagined could happen when someone is teaching you maths. He is now encouraging his younger brother to have some tutoring with Tom too. Thank you Tom. We will be continuing our sessions despite the fact that my son is starting at a highly regarded selective school. Our reasoning is that given our son's progress and love of lessons with Tom, why rock the boat?
We needed a tutor for our 10 year daughter, Yasmin as she struggles in Maths. In the past we had a few different tutors but they didn’t help or made any difference at all.
When Tom started tutoring Yasmin we noticed the difference straight away - even her school teachers noticed too. Tom has also helped with Yasmin’s attitude towards maths - she is much more confident and happy to do her maths homework, whereas before she would panic and not do it at all. Since the tutoring she has moved up a level already - she understands a lot more in maths now. We put this down to Tom’s great tutoring. He has a firm and fun approach and Yasmin looks forward to her lesson with Tom. The difference with Tom to the other tutors is that he really cares and is very passionate about his teaching, he will think of different ways to teach Yasmin. He has sometimes called or sent emails with different ideas for teaching or just giving me advice how to help her.View more recommendations
