About Joshua
I am a first-year Earth Sciences undergraduate at the University of Oxford, with a strong academic background in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Geography. I achieved four A grades at A-level, including taking Maths a year early in Year 12, as well as an A* in my EPQ.
I have always particularly enjoyed Maths and Physics. At GCSE, I achieved the top grade in Maths with 96% across both papers, alongside excellent results across my other subjects. During my time at Colfe’s School, I also received numerous academic awards in Maths and Physics, including several “Best in School” awards.
I genuinely enjoy teaching and helping students develop their confidence as well as their academic ability. Having recently been through GCSEs and A-levels myself, I understand both the demands of these exams and the areas students commonly find difficult. I aim to make challenging material feel intuitive and approachable, adapting my explanations to the individual student rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
Whether a student wants to strengthen their foundations, improve their exam performance or push towards the very highest grades, I enjoy helping them reach their potential.

My lessons focus on developing a genuine understanding of Maths rather than simply memorising methods and formulae. Maths is a hierarchical subject: new concepts continually build upon previous knowledge, so I make sure students understand the foundations of a topic before moving on to more difficult applications.
I tailor each lesson to the individual student, identifying gaps in understanding and explaining concepts in a clear and relatable way. Once the underlying idea is secure, we apply it to progressively more challenging questions, including exam-style problems. This helps students learn not only how to answer a particular type of question, but also why the method works and how to recognise when to use it.
This deeper understanding is particularly important for achieving the highest grades, where questions increasingly require problem-solving and the application of familiar concepts in unfamiliar situations. I help students develop this skill by encouraging them to think independently, make connections between topics and approach difficult questions systematically.
Lessons can be adapted to each student’s goals, whether that means revisiting difficult topics, consolidating schoolwork, preparing for an upcoming exam or working through more advanced material to aim for the top grades.
