About Jones
Teaching guitar is one of the most fulfilling parts of my life because it allows me to help others unlock their creative potential and build skills that bring lasting joy. My teaching method is based on blending structure with flexibility: I provide a clear pathway of skill development—from mastering open chords and rhythm patterns to exploring soloing and composition—but I also remain responsive to what inspires each student. We don’t just follow a curriculum; we co-create it, using songs and genres that reflect the student’s musical identity. I teach theory in a hands-on way, connecting scale shapes to solo ideas, chord structures to songwriting tools, and rhythm to feel and groove. My lessons often include listening activities, backing track play-alongs, and exercises that blend ear training with performance. I encourage students to set personal goals and reflect on their progress regularly. One unforgettable experience was guiding a group of college students through a collaborative recording project where they each contributed parts to a song—rhythm, lead, bass, and lyrics—resulting in a track they proudly shared with friends and family. Beyond technique, I talk with students about discipline, focus, and even the emotional ups and downs of learning an instrument. I believe in teaching the whole person, not just the player. I create a lesson space that is safe, encouraging, and free of judgment, where experimentation is celebrated and progress is personalized. With my guitar teaching, the goal is to turn your initial inspiration into consistent, meaningful progress by combining technical mastery with musical creativity. We start by focusing on core skills—posture, finger placement, strumming, and chord transitions—but these are always taught in the context of songs that speak to you.
You won’t practice drills disconnected from real music; instead, each exercise is tied to the styles and pieces you want to play, whether that’s acoustic folk, rock anthems, blues solos, or funky rhythms. I emphasize understanding the mechanics of music, explaining how chord shapes lead to progressions, how rhythm creates groove, and how these elements interact to form songs. Communication is essential—I break down concepts in accessible language and check in regularly to make sure lessons meet your needs.
I adapt my teaching methods to your learning style, whether that means visual aids like chord charts, auditory support with backing tracks, or practical exercises like looping for rhythm practice. Guitar should feel like a joyful means of self-expression, not a frustrating code to crack. I share inspiring stories from both professional musicians and fellow learners to demonstrate what’s possible and keep motivation high. Along with playing, I teach essential musicianship skills like stage preparation, tone control, effective practice planning, reading notation or charts, and improvising creatively.
