About Patrick

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been a specialist brass teacher for the last 10 years (plus). I am proud to be a brass teacher and ensemble director at Highgate School, Colfe's School and The Ravensbourne School, where I've been privileged to see many students grow into fine musicians. I've also been lucky enough to coach many fantastic amateur brass bands and orchestras as well as fine ensembles at Trinity College and Chichester University.

I've been developing my brass pedagogy through lesson and workshops with great brass players, including the famous pedagog Kristian Streenstrup. I'm lucky to be able to pass on these teaching ideas to my students, in turn.

I also do plenty of performing. I trained with ensembles such as the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, TCM Symphony Orchestra and National Youth Jazz Orchestra. I work with many renowned professional orchestras, including the Camerata of London, Pro-Arte Orchestra, Southern Pro Musica, and Docklands Sinfonia. My diverse performing work also includes professional West End/touring musical theatre, National Theatre productions, commercial work with notable pop acts and a wide variety of chamber music. This has included working for renowned ensembles such as SuperBrass and J5O Brass.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes I have up-to-date DBS certificates from a number of schools and education projects I work with; I am a member of the update system.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at Trinity College of Music with Brian Thomson (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) and Andy Hendrie (BBC Symphony Orchestra). Previous teachers have included trumpet virtuoso Mark Bennet, Paul Archibald and Henry Lowther.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

My diary is MAS (Musicians Answering Service).

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have students of all ages, abilities and learning various styles of music. Many of my students have gone on to study music with trumpet as there main instrument, hold positions in their school or college ensembles and perform regularly. My older students play in many local brass bands and orchestras and continue to improve and gain more enjoyment form their music making.

I've been a student of the trumpet for the last 25 years, and have been studying teaching brass for 10 years+, observing and learning form the greatest brass players around. I am confident I can help you achieve what you want from your playing.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I specialize in classical trumpet. This can range from Orchestral playing through to chamber groups (quintets for example) to solo works. On top of this I can teach commercial trumpet playing such as function band playing to show work. I can also teach Jazz and jazz theory at beginner level.

I can teach all the instruments of the brass band family. I currently do this at numerous schools and have a strong brass banding background. Playing conducting and coaching.

Aside from instrumental lessons I also tutor in theory (jazz and classical), composition/ arranging and musicianship.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I started training on trumpet in Jersey Channel Islands at secondary school. I won an award allowing me to travel to London on a monthly basis to study with RCM professor and trumpet virtuoso Mark Bennett. Following this I studied for my undergrad at the University of Chichester under Fraser Tannock. After this I won the Ashton Scholarship to study at Trinity College of Music to complete my training with a PGDip specialising in orchestral trumpet performance practice under Brian Thomson (principle trumpet of the royal Philharmonic Orchestra) and Andy Hendrie (trumpet with BBCSO).

- How much do you charge?

I charge £40 per hour on a one-to-one basis. Lessons of 30 mins can be arranged for £20 if in a nearby location.

- Where do you teach?

My teaching is focused in North London. I teach from home where, where I have my studio, and a large collection of teaching materials. I can also visit students' houses.

- When are you available?

I am flexible and can arrange lessons at the convenience of the student. Weekdays or weekends, Mornings, afternoons or evenings.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach students at any age, from absolute beginner up to degree level and above.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can prepare students for any musical grade they wish to complete; practical or theory. We can work towards either ABRSM (classical or jazz) or Trinity Guildhall exams. I can also advise and prepare students for school, college or university auditions.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Online tutoring for theory, composition or musicianship can be conducted over Skype.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I believe that learning to play a musical instrument is a skill that will stay with you all your life and in return for your diligence and dedication will give you endless rewards. I also firmly believe that it is a very personal journey, with this in mind I can assure students that I will tailor lessons to the needs of the individual so that every student can get out of it what he/ she wants and learn a skill that will stay with them forever.
