Having studied Chinese myself for 12 years, I am no stranger to the trials and tribulations the language brings.
Like any language, Chinese can only be learnt through making mistakes - lots of them! Sifting through page after page of vocabulary can be daunting. But mostly, it's extremely inefficient.
Students have to apply and use new grammar and words in order to understand them. Otherwise, the simplest of tasks can seem intimidating or - even worse - abstract.
I encourage students to talk, and talk about the things they want to talk about. "The husbands drank the milk" is tricky to remember as there's no real motivation to remember it - thanks anyway Duolingo!
Once students learn how to express themselves, they'll find they've tackled most of the nitty gritty grammar stuff in the process.
