About Jacob
I am a PhD-qualified sociologist with substantial experience in academic research, teaching and public-policy research.
My doctoral research examined mixed-race identity and identity formation, and I also hold an MSc in International Politics and a BA in Politics with Philosophy.
My research experience includes qualitative and quantitative methods, interviews, focus groups, surveys, literature reviews and analysis of social and policy issues. I have worked in research roles as well as lecturing and teaching in higher-education settings.
I particularly enjoy helping students who have good ideas but are struggling to organise them into a coherent academic argument.
My approach is supportive but rigorous. Rather than rewriting work for students, I help them identify what is not working, understand why, and develop the skills to improve it themselves.

My university-level sessions are designed to help students become clearer, more confident and more independent in their academic work.
I can support students with developing research questions, planning dissertations, structuring chapters, literature reviews, methodology, qualitative and quantitative research methods, interviews, focus groups, surveys, critical analysis and academic argument.
For essays and dissertations, I focus particularly on structure, line of argument, use of evidence, critical engagement with literature and making sure each section contributes clearly to the overall question.
I can also help students understand research design and methodology, including the strengths and limitations of different approaches.
Sessions are usually one hour and are suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Sociology, Politics, International Relations and related social-science subjects.
My role is to help students develop and improve their own work while maintaining academic integrity.
