About Michael
I’m a cultural anthropologist with a PhD, more than a decade of university teaching experience, and a professional career that has wandered happily through research, performance, media, education and cultural production.
I’ve taught anthropology and research methods, supported students through major research projects, conducted qualitative and ethnographic research, and spent a lot of time helping people turn complicated material into something clearer, stronger and more interesting.
My own research has covered ethnography, grounded theory, digital culture, performance, embodiment and meaning-making. I’m also a published writer and have spent decades working in creative environments where ideas eventually have to leave the page and work in front of actual people.
I take scholarship seriously without believing it has to sound grim.
I’m curious, rigorous, a little suspicious of unnecessary jargon, and particularly fond of the moment when a messy piece of work suddenly reveals what it has been trying to say all along.
Strange question? Awkward interdisciplinary project? Research that refuses to fit neatly into a box?
Excellent. Those are usually the interesting ones.

Bring me the research, writing or thinking that is refusing to behave.
That might be a question that will not quite settle, a methodology section that feels foggy, interview material you are struggling to interpret, an essay argument that is not holding together, or a thesis chapter that has become far more complicated than it looked three weeks ago.
I work mainly with qualitative research, anthropology, academic writing and research development.
Areas I can help with include ethnography, grounded theory, thematic analysis, interviewing, literature reviews, research design, argument structure, essay planning and thesis development.
Sessions are collaborative and practical. We work out what the real problem is, test possible ways through it, clarify the thinking and identify what you need to do next.
I do not use a one-size-fits-all formula. My aim is to help you understand your own work more clearly and become more confident in the decisions you are making.
I work with undergraduate, Honors, Masters and PhD students, particularly in the humanities, social sciences and qualitative research.
I offer teaching, feedback and research coaching — not ghostwriting or completion of assessed work.
