About Ian
My qualifications include my English master’s degree from the flagship research institution, the University of North Dakota where I began to teach at the undergraduate level. I bring with me skills in leadership, mentoring, pedagogical, dialogue-centered and discussion-based teaching methods that recenter the student’s input and help students make conversation points occur where they lack confidence. I will complete my PhD in English focusing on cinema, sound studies and the histories of media cultures in the “post-Soviet” context this spring and look forward to entering the educational system in my full capacity as Professor. I have a broad range of skill sets and experiences which I can bring to class and colleagues in an adaptable style, I seek to be a member of the community of educators in Los Angeles because it was the city of my birth and harbors some of my most favored bookstores. In my opinion I have history with the city and want to get back to those roots. Thanks to my work in collaboration with Sakha (Yakutia) peoples living within and without the Russian Federation, I have gained unique and nuanced insights into the Soviet and “post-Soviet” world.

I mastered intersectional approaches to instruction and pedagogy that followed from the research and criticism I began at the University of North Dakota under the direction of Sheila Liming, a scholar and published author of several critical works. In these years I began to encounter radical feminist and decolonial thought, as well as critical race theory. Through my work with colleagues and my mentors I forged new research methods informed by these dialogues. I taught students in rhetoric and composition courses which prepared me to expand my pedagogical scope more broadly but also with more nuanced courses when I continued my education at the University of California, Riverside. At UCR I taught everything from composition and research methods to creative writing, film criticism, poetry, and so much more; the unique opportunities that the intersection of the English department’s goals, and the UCR student population created new lessons for me to grow from as an instructor. I have mastered how to work with populations that sometimes are labeled as “first generation”, where the diversity of the student population begins to reflect the community of the area. In my instruction I learn about the ongoing changes in values and communication styles as generations reconfigure the abstractions of their predecessors. I do my best to equip students and then to follow their flight paths as they take off into their own research projects. However, I also have extensive experience, and years of lessons from teaching more focused and established curriculum where students must research according to more narrow categories, topics, and paradigms. As a result, I have grown into a well-rounded educational professional with experience teaching all age groups and a gamut of cultural contexts within and without the United States. In addition to intensive teaching and research experience, my master’s degree and now my all but dissertation stage PhD degree program have advanced me as a scholar, an instructor, and as an individual. I have participated in interdisciplinary teaching and research projects with media/culture studies, art, dance, and theater in addition to my own critical and cinematic methods of instruction. These skills will make an ideal candidate for the position of Adjunct Professor because they grant insight and demonstrate experience with leadership and the implementation of strategy. I work to help folk unlock more than their potential but also their embodied interests, encouraging them to work towards destinies they both forge and define in the same move. I have the technical and research skills as well as the leadership skills required for the demands of this kind of position. In the present I create active and interactive classroom settings by combining methods of sharing and responsibility with the given curriculum and planned lessons for each class meeting. My teaching style fosters an independence and creativity in my students which leads them into thought-provoking research trajectories. In the end students leave my courses gaining the ability to conduct meaningful research, craft critically informed research, and can lead and organize their own classroom discussions. The goal of my methods is to foster in students, the teacher I observe them to be already when in instruction.
