About Sushil

I am a PhD candidate in Economics at Imperial College London. I was previously an Economics Research Consultant at the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, and prior to that a Research and Teaching Fellow at University of Warwick. I completed my MSc in Economics at University of Warwick before these jobs.

Economics can be a difficult and abstract subject to get one's head around. I faced this struggle first-hand, when I switched from my job as a Construction Engineer to the MSc in Economics at Warwick. I was still able to stick to my interests and work towards getting into a competitive PhD programme because I learnt to teach Economics to myself. Having overcome this personal challenge in the past, is what helps me be a supportive tutor and mentor today.

I chose the path of a PhD because I love research, mentoring and teaching. I take a special interest in Causal Econometrics, Data Science, Modelling using Economic Theory and Programming. I look forward to helping you gain confidence and independence in Economics, Maths, Programming, Data Science, Econometrics and Research.

My tutoring is based on the idea that however abstract a subject appears in the classroom, it can be explainable to a 5-year-old. With this idea in mind, I start at the level that the tutee is comfortable with, and build up their confidence and interest in stages.

I help tutees face the challenge of learning difficult topics by making these seemingly dry subjects more relatable to them. To my pleasure, my past students have been surprised by the fact that a dull subject like Econometrics could even offer life lessons! I work on an iPad and use visuals and real-life examples which I share with tutees after our session.

Typically, I do one-hour sessions in which we cover concepts together. Additionally, according to the tutee needs, I provide written and/or verbal feedback on their assignments, problem sets, homework and theses. I do this either in the sessions, or provide written feedback via email.

I have been both, a private tutor and a teaching assistant while I was an MSc student and then later, a Teaching Fellow at the University of Warwick, and have won Tutoring Excellence Awards for two consecutive years in 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years for tutoring in Statistics, Econometrics, Stata and Microeconomics to Economics and PPE undergraduate and masters students.

The 1-hour time that we will spend, discussing the material on call.

I charge separately for additional time outside our calls, for feedback and verifying homework and assignments from our sessions over emails/text. The charge will be on a pro-rata basis at the rate of £55 an hour. For time outside contact hours, I meticulously record the work I do and the time it takes, so that my work is transparent.
