About Sandy
I've been teaching the violin for over 10+ years. I am an active performer; professional violinist and I hold a position in the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. I graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts from Michigan State University in violin performance. My teaching style depends on what goal the student wants to achieve. Many of my students won prizes in competitions or orchestra auditions. Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to lead a sectional violin in a junior high school’s string orchestra for years. Beyond that, I also gave coaching for the string quartet to my students regularly. Through these experiences, I have been fortunate enough to educate a diverse group of elementary and middle school students. I am passionate about teaching violin and really enjoy how students inspire me in life. I always focus on expanding children’s interests by improvising music, playing, or recomposing pop music, and incorporating music activities such as concerts, performances, and competitions to encourage and build children’s confidence. By utilizing these methods, I am able to reach out to each student and give them a fun learning environment, and help them to develop their talents while nurturing their passion for music. I have taught the violin, viola, and piano at all levels including beginners, intermediate and advanced. I also taught chamber music and orchestra sectional practice at the Interlochen Fine Art Festival. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!
