About Stephanie
My name is Stephanie Estrada and I am a PhD Graduate Student in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Indiana University. I am in the Spanish Literature and Culture program. I am also a currently an Associated Instructor for the Spanish Department at IU and have taught courses for beginners, level 2 Spanish learners, and advanced students interested in Hispanic Cultures and Spanish Writing.
I am from Anaheim, California and received my Spanish B.A. at Chapman University. I have native fluency in Spanish and English as a Latina with parents born in Mexico. I am actively involved in teaching and learning Mexican Ballet Folklórico for over 20 years. I have experience in tutoring and teaching Spanish at various levels and throughout different stages of my academic career. I prioritize the needs of my students and being a part of their journey learning not only the Spanish language, but hispanic cultures.

I supplement material university students are learning in their courses if they wish to get one-on-one feedback and help from a fluent English and Spanish speaker. I also set up lessons for any type of need whether it be practicing Spanish speaking fluency through conversation topics, expanding their vocabulary, interested in learning Spanish, improving their writing skills, interest in learning about Hispanic literature and culture, and preparedness.
I apply task based learning methods completely in Spanish. I set learning goals for each tutoring session. A typical lesson plan starts with setting what the goal is for example learning the "pretérito." I spend a few minutes discussing the grammar concept and what knowledge the student already has. I supplement with handouts when needed. The objective is for students to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the grammar concept. I then continue to provide examples based on vocabulary students want to learn and get more practice using. We do simple exercises of conjugation and verb formation with fill in the blank sentences with the correct conjugation of the verb. Finally at the end I include a discussion topic in the format of a conversation in which students are expected to use the grammar concept. These types of lessons are for those students in second level of Spanish and above. I also provide AP Spanish prep lessons for students in high school whether it be for the language or literature AP Spanish exam.
