About Joe
I am the head of the Writing & Communication Center at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN.
I received my PhD in philosophy from Duke University in 2020. While at Duke, I taught courses in philosophy and logic, and worked as writing studio consultant (i.e. one-on-one writing tutor) at the Thompson Writing Center.
I have experience working with many kinds of students on many kinds of writing, from college freshmen to late-stage grad students, from academic assignments to presentations and job application materials, from the humanities to the social sciences and STEM.
In addition to the above, I would also be happy to work with students on pre-college writing and general college prep (including standardized test prep).

I begin by focusing on the basics. What exactly is the point of the assignment you are working on, skill you are developing, or test you are preparing for? And what exactly are you trying to achieve?
From there, I work with students to develop helpful guiding principles. For example, in my time as a college instructor, I developed two basic guiding principles for academic writing, and three "critical strategies" for argumentation in college papers. (But you'll have to work with me to find out what they are!)
Finally, we apply the principles, with attention to the specifics of the task(s) at hand and the students' particular talents and needs.
