About Abu
I am Abu, a Research Scientist at the University of St Andrews, where my research explores the chemistry of the early Earth and the origin of life. I hold an MSc in Geological Sciences and a PhD in Geochemistry, and my work combines chemistry, physics, mathematics and laboratory investigation to answer fundamental scientific questions.
I have more than five years of private tutoring experience in India, including supporting secondary school students preparing for the Madhyamik examination. In addition, I have taught undergraduate students, supervised MSc students and supported laboratory and practical learning at university level. These experiences have given me a strong understanding of how students develop scientific knowledge at different stages of their education.
I bring both subject expertise and professional academic experience to my tutoring. For students who are curious about science, I can also show how the ideas studied in school connect with real scientific questions, from chemical reactions and forces to understanding how life may have begun on Earth.
I am a PVG Scheme member for work with children in Scotland. Lessons are conducted in English, and I can also communicate in Bengali, Hindi and Urdu where this is helpful for students or families.

My lessons are designed around the student’s current understanding and the areas where they need support. In the first lesson, I discuss the topics they are studying at school and identify the concepts or types of questions they find difficult. This allows me to plan lessons that are focused and useful rather than simply repeating material they already know.
For Maths, I focus on developing a clear problem-solving method: understanding the question, selecting the correct approach and working through each step accurately. For Physics and Chemistry, I help students connect the underlying concepts with calculations, diagrams and real examples, so that the subject becomes easier to understand and remember.
A typical lesson lasts one hour. I usually begin by reviewing a key idea, then work through examples with the student before giving them similar questions to attempt independently. This helps me see whether they have genuinely understood the topic and where further explanation is needed.
Lessons are suitable for secondary school students who need help with classroom topics, homework, revision or preparation for school assessments. My aim is to make each lesson clear, focused and encouraging, while helping students become more confident in tackling questions on their own.
