About Martina
I have been working in the field of education for 10+ years as a classroom teacher in Spanish immersion or mainstream schools in bilingual contexts. Aside from being a language prof, I’m an art teacher in k-12 settings. I am Bolivian-American. I have lived in Bolivia and visited 7 other Latin American countries. I love traveling, nature, art and spending time with my 5 yo, bilingual son and husband. My teaching philosophy includes using the natural approach (Krashen & Terrell, 1983) whereby learners learn language naturally as opposed to acquisition. Acquisition requires a focus on form, i.e., on grammar, while natural learning requires a focus on meaning. Meaning is achieved by giving learners lots of comprehensible input. When students are exposed to this input in fun and practical contexts, acquisition is an inevitable byproduct. Thus, my belief is that through engaging and interactive lessons that minimize boredom and stress, you can learn a second language…and well!

Depending on your age and needs, I will tailor the lessons to you. For example, teens and adults can have more critical thinking conversations, so we could engage in project-based learning. On the other hand, younger kids might enjoy learning through games and auditory stimulation among other techniques. My lessons are not just developmentally appropriate and useful, but engaging and fun!
