About Corrin

From a young age, I have been captivated by the complexities of the human brain and behavior. Simultaneously, I had a love of writing, helping others learn, and public speaking. These lifelong curiosities led me to combine my interests and earn a bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Intercultural Communications. During my undergraduate years, my passion for psychology and dedication to excellence earned me several research and writing awards, membership in Psi Chi, the international psychology honors society, summer research fellowships, research conference presentations, and an appointment as a peer tutor in general writing, academic writing, psychology, and statistics. This experience solidified my love for helping others learn in a way that is tailored to their needs and inspired my pursuit of a career dedicated to educating the next generation of great minds.

Committed to a lifelong career in answering my scientific questions, gaining a deep understanding and appreciation for human thought and behavior, and writing, I pursued a Master's Degree in Clinical Adult Psychology. This journey included a peer tutor position, a full tuition scholarship and Competitive Graduate Award based on my thesis proposal, several competitive research grants, a two-year research assistantship, and a year-long clinical practicum rotation in Neuropsychology.

Currently, I am a PhD student in Experimental Psychology, focusing on Cognitive Neuroscience. As a Graduate Student Lecturer, I teach both Intro to Psychology and Experimental Projects, helping students develop independent thinking, collaborative mindsets, critical thinking and reasoning, strong ethical principles, and a passion for science. My goal is to give my students a strong foundational comprehension of our field and the scientific process, as well as help them build the confidence and empowerment to answer their curiosities through scientific projects and writing.

In my courses, I employ interactive workshops, engaging lectures, study groups, group research projects, and activities aimed at maximizing retention, understanding, and interest in the subjects I teach. Additionally, I focus much of my time on helping my students develop strong reading comprehension, writing skills, and study habits based on their individual preferences, interests, and needs, as I feel these are essential foundational skills necessary for success in every single career field. My students consistently rate me highly on RateMyProfessor, and many continue to seek my guidance for writing tutoring, research project development, scientific process understanding, and career development. I never consider my job "done" as a professor, and am committed to helping each of my students succeed and grow as confident academics and individuals. I am humbled by this opportunity and consider myself very fortunate to have the privilege to watch my students grow personally, professionally, and academically.

My approach to teaching is deeply rooted in my commitment to providing personalized, tailored pedagogical methods that respect individual differences through catering to each student's unique circumstances, interests, and needs. Whether you're looking to improve your academic writing skills, understand complex psychological concepts, or develop a research project, my goal is to inspire confidence, establish a solid foundation of knowledge, and help you achieve your academic and professional goals.

Let's embark on this educational journey together and unlock your full (action) potential!

I am dedicated and passionate about providing personalized, tailored teaching approaches that cater to each student's unique learning style and needs. My Master’s degree in Clinical Adult Psychology and status as a PhD student in Experimental Psychology have allowed me to gain experience teaching and tutoring a variety of courses—including Academic Writing, Intro to Psychology, Experimental Psychology & Research Methods, Psychological Ethics, Biopsychology, Cognitive Psychology, and Clinical Psychology courses—I bring a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to student progress and success, which looks different for everyone.

Teaching is truly my passion. Because of this, I have put a great deal of time and effort into crafting lessons and activities that are fun, customized, and in line with current and cutting-edge teaching methods. My lessons are designed to engage students through diverse and fun techniques, such as trivia and various learning games, writer’s workshops, memorization games and techniques such as mnemonic devices and story methods, idea generation activities, fictional practical application scenarios, collaborative feedback or editing, and personalized worksheets. I have extensive experience working with a varying cohort of students with different needs and requirements, including those with an Individualized Education Plan, Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations, and different learning abilities such as ADHD and ASD. My minor in Intercultural Communications has also given me the ability to plan and administer lessons and activities to a diverse array of individuals. I have taught and tutored from early high school through university levels, as well as peer writing tutoring for fellow graduate students.

A typical mock lesson plan for tutoring academic writing or various psychology courses might begin with a brief overview of the topic, followed by a question-and-answer session to ascertain where each student may need further help or knowledge reinforcement. This is followed by a collaborative discussion on the structure and requirements of the paper, APA formatting, or other coursework assignments. We would then engage in trivia or other games to reinforce key ideas, move on to structuring and translating these ideas into an engaging paper or assignment, and conclude with feedback and editing. Personalized worksheets, study guides, and study technique tips would be provided to reinforce learning and track progress.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my commitment to creating captivating, tailored lessons that cater to each student's individual needs. My lessons are designed for high school to university-level students, including those studying psychology at any level, and those looking to improve their general or academic writing skills. What also sets me apart is spending several years as a general writing tutor, which allows me to tutor a variety of different writing modalities, from research proposals to journal articles, abstracts, and argumentative essays outside of the STEM field. Whether you need help with specific psychology and neuroscience coursework or want to enhance your research and writing abilities, my goal is to help you grow, succeed, and have fun along the way!
