About Helen
I am 24!years old. I have a BSc hons in Genetics from the University of Nottingham and a Masters in Quantitative Genetics from the University of Edinburgh. I am currently working as a 2nd year DPhil Student at University of Oxford, Studying Genomic Medicine and Statistics. I am looking to help GCSE and A level students gain confidence in biology. As well as having GCSE and A level tutoring experience, I have worked in retail and hospitality over several years- I therefore have strong interpersonal skills. From my personal experience of being tutored in physics A level, I experienced first-hand the benefits that good tutoring can bring, building students confidence and enthusiasm when faced with challenging topics, while helping them to achieve the grades they desire. As someone who is now knowledgeable and passionate about biology (especially genetics!) I would like to continue to use the knowledge gained during my degrees help provide this for students like myself.

Sessions are typically 1 hour long. I will normally begin a first session by talking to the student and identifying the subject areas in which they feel less confident. Usually, if I have had several lessons with a student we will go through exam questions which I have set the previous session. If they have encountered any issues with these then we can begin to work on the question together. In a typical session I would usually make a small presentation containing learning outcomes and key concepts within the topic. The student and I would then go through past exam questions. I feel that engaging in conversation around the topic with the student is the best way to boost engagement and confidence, especially focusing on the more difficult topics and exam questions. A lot of A level and GCSE biology can appear content heavy, with complex and seemingly unrelated topics. This can be overwhelming for students. I feel that using my knowledge and enthusiasm gained in higher education I can confidently provide context and “the bigger picture” for students if necessary. It is important to me that the student feels heard and understood in my sessions, as I think that interaction and collaboration is the best way to learn. I have A level biology, a first-class degree in genetics from the University of Nottingham, and a Masters in Quantitative Genetics from the University of Edinburgh. During my A levels, I tutored maths and physics GCSE. I have since tutored Biology A level and some undergraduate content since graduating.
