About Josh
I have experience teaching literature, philosophy, and languages (Latin & Greek) to middle-, high-school, and university students. Four years of research experience as a doctoral candidate at New York University. Research areas include Greek and Roman philosophy and poetry; Ancient Greek Religion; and Hellenistic Monarchy and State Religion. Recently I earned my master’s degree through my PhD program and defended by dissertation proposal on ‘Royal and Divine Sovereignty in Hellenistic Greece.’ The project deals with how the monarchs of that period attempted to associate themselves with pre-existing religious institutions, and how this became a point for the negotiation of power between kings and local communities. Recently, I also gained admission with full funding to the American School for Classical Studies in Athens. Receiving admission with full funding to this program is highly competitive, and the award is to study in Greece with free room and board, and to be given free travel to the principal archaeological sites and museums of the country. It offers courses based on these travels, and it also grants time for PhD candidates to finish a significant portion of their dissertations. This program begins in September, and I am therefore seeking Employment for Summer 2023.

I like to run lessons according to specific needs of the student and to tailor my teaching methods to the needs of my students. I teach writing, languages, and the verbal components of standardized tests. With the first subject, I prefer to read and comment on what students write. Sometimes as an exercise, I ask them to write a single paragraph on a given topic which allows for rapid feedback. I am also happy to help with larger writing projects. With languages, I am happy to use whichever textbook the student may be using but also able to construct my own lessons.
