About John

I teach holistically so that my students can:
1. Stay focused, interested, motivated - free to ask me anything
2. Experience how philosophy practically applies to the sciences, history, the arts, business, psychology, sociology and politics
3. Understand complex abstarct ideas
4. Master academic writing presentations and assessments
5. Think critically and creatively
6. Improve their English fluency and find their voice
7. Adapt to Canadian (academic) culture, for foreign students
8. Develop academic skills for postgraduate courses
I have helped hundreds of students succeed over the past 35 years by simplifying the many complex ideas in philosophy. (If a teacher cannot do this, they are not a real teacher, or they do not really understand the subject themselves.) Now, let me help you understand and enjoy studying philosophy.

Here is how I teach Philosophy in a few easy steps, which we can discuss further when we connect

a) Our learning styles and personalities
I use one or two online tests to help us understand how we can best use our learning styles and personalities to learn together. I will show you how we can do this.

b) Lesson format
We will discuss and tailor the lesson to your learning needs and what works for you. I always listen to what my students have to say before I make any suggestions.

c) Resources Supplied
I will provide you with a colourful deck of PPT slides for each lesson, along with a hyperlinked list of relevant videos, academic papers, etc., to simplify complex ideas and further extend your learning.

8. Do you teach for free sometimes? (Free lessons, Special Arrangements and Discounts)

8.1 The first lesson, lasting one hour or more, is free: We must establish a solid foundation right from the start so that we are crystal clear about our mutual expectations and deliverables. If we take the time to begin this way, we will both feel more secure and enjoy our time together.
Purpose: to get to know each other, to establish the student's needs, and to negotiate a teaching schedule, style and fee payment schedule that works for both of us, to explore your prior knowledge of the subject and if possible, provide a basic introduction.

8.2 Special arrangements and discounts: I do, in some instances, tutor at a hugely discounted rate, for free or with a barter arrangement. This is done entirely at my discretion and based on the request of the group or individual, which I will assess. If you would like to ask me for this, ask me only once. Multiple requests (aka nagging) from the same person or organization will be automatically rejected.

Requirements: I can grade a piece of work or present a presentation and provide feedback. I will review each piece before grading, and the additional cost will be given to students upfront. The grading will be in a Word document you submit. I will include extensive written feedback and a video recording that summarizes the key strengths of your writing and areas for improvement. The work I am asked to do must not violate any academic policies.

Rates: If a student requires me to grade a piece of work exceeding one page outside of tuition time, my standard tuition fees apply, and I will let the student know in advance what the charge will b be, as per the hourly rate they previously accepted (e.g., 10). University and College Assignments, Papers: Feedback and Grading

11. Do you [provide Academic Coaching and Tuioring?
Requirements: If the university a student is studying at permits the use of academic coaches, I can grade a paper before it is submitted and suggest edits. Should I request it, I will need to review the institution's academic policies and the course briefing provided by the student's teacher. Is this permissible?

I will not do any substantial grading, re-evaluation, or revaluation with students who have had at least two lessons together and understand each other's roles.

Rates: standard tuition rates, if required, outside of scheduled lesson time with me. Students will receive an estimate of the costs before grading commences, and must accept this additional charge before I begin.

12. How do you or I cancel or reschedule a lesson?

Cancellations require reuire 24 notice. I will do the same, or if there is an emergency and an appointment is cancelled or rescheduled by the student or me within less than 24 hours, there will be no charge issued by me, nor will a refund be given to the student. The missed lesson will be rescheduled, and the agreed rate will be paid upon completion.

13. What stuff do you use to teach me with? (Supplementary resources and written work)

There is no extra charge for these services, including grading any written work that I set for the student.

Whilst working with students, I utilize a wide variety of resources to help them improve their academic performance. These include, but are not limited to:

learning assessments and profiles, video clips, academic papers, PPTs, class notes, etc.

I may require students to complete short assessments or written assignments. To gain the maximum benefit from the Tuition, I strongly advise students to complete all assigned tasks.

Refunds will be issued only under 2 conditions.

14.1 No measurable academic improvement
If a student can clearly demonstrate that they have conscientiously completed all the tasks assigned during the tuition period and have provided me with a realistic benchmark of their academic performance before engaging me as a tutor, then I will consider them We both agree on this benchmark (e.g., the student was obtaining an Average of 30% on their written assignments) that their academic performance has not improved during the tutoring I will issue the student a full refund.

14.2 Urgent life circumstances and a withdrawal from the tutoring
If a student has paid in advance for a series of lessons to take advantage of a discount, I will refund 70% of the tuition fees paid in advance for tuition sessions that the student has not yet taken. The refund will be processed within a month of cancellation.
