About Matthew
My diverse career in the arts encompasses being a working artist with international exhibitions, publications; along with being a professor of photography and new media for over 20 years. My art and teaching practice draws on the diverse arts positions I have held, including: manager of an art gallery, art critic, executive director of a non-profit community darkroom, reviewer of thousands of photography portfolios, arts podcaster, and even a mentor/judge on a photography competition TV show. Through the years, I have lived and taught in the USA, UAE, and Czech Republic working with a wide range of cultures, ages and levels of students. My photography courses are an integrated mix of technical and conceptual knowledge with historical understanding, creating an innovative approach to its contemporary practice. I work with a humanistic and experiential teaching methodologies, teaching to each student’s individual strengths and weaknesses, while covering common ground in the classroom. I have taught a variety of classes, including: all levels of black & white and color processes, alternative/non-silver processes, large-format printing, bookmaking, video/inter-media, professional practices, and public art. As a working artist, I use a hybrid approach to photographic creation, drawing on the many facets of the expanding medium. It is this exploratory and experimental approach that I bring to the classroom, inviting students to lean into the unknown and experiment widely with an array of photographic practices. I have first-hand knowledge of the inner workings of the art world, the nitty gritty of making art, selling art, exhibiting art, talking about art, as well as planning for a long career. For three years I have hosted The Wise Fool Art Podcast, which has served as an extension of my research and teaching, interviewing over 300 guests from across the globe on a range of arts related topics, issues of contemporary artistic practice, and potential career paths. The process of building a career in the arts is often a circuitous path with a range of potential opportunities – it is important for art students today to become lifelong learners. By giving them the reins, I hope to awaken in each student new awareness about themselves, their world and their artistic potential. Helping to navigate their unique path in the arts, my classes and teachings foster inquiry, independence and self-confidence.

I available to help people of all levels to enhance your photographic skills. My aim as a teacher is to encourage students to explore new strategies of form and expansive interpretations of meaning, meanwhile acquiring the practical skills necessary to survive as an artist today. My teaching methodology includes mastering, then transcending technical foundations, so as to freely experiment, interpret and expand conceptually. At the core is an inquiry into how/why things work, with an emphasis on problem solving - a key to successfully navigating the intricacies of a creative life. I encourage a sense of creative play with an invitation to fail, thereby benefitting from mistakes. These mistakes can be teachings, just as they can lead to new creative avenues. Mentoring students is a perpetual improv class, engaging the student with the response ‘Yes, and’ – Yes you can do that, and let’s investigate how/why… It is the process of risk and reward, of vulnerability and trust, that I see as fundamental to artistic creation and attempt to instill in each student.

Perfect! It was a pleasure talking to Matthew. He really took the time to listen and understand my artistic needs, aspirations and goals for learning. Matthew is willing to meet me where I am at in my creative journey and determine where to start. We were able to successfully discuss ideas and how to approach my work. I received invaluable advice and recommandations to get me started down a successful path for learning and sharpening my skills. He is patient, knowledgeable and very helpful at explaining things concisely to a novice like myself. I appreciate the ability to ask questions and have exclusive access to his perspective and years of experience in the field. Matthew makes me feel heard and eager to learn from him.
