About Mia
I recently finished my PhD in Theoretical Physics at Imperial College London, where I carried out research in String Theory, an exciting subject at the forefront of particle physics. Tutoring has been my main source of income for several years now, so I have well over a thousand hours of experience. I know the school syllabuses very well and being a research physicist, physics and maths are my everyday bread and butter. I love tutoring and I care very deeply about my tutees. I have a talent for explaining things, as demonstrated by the various prizes I have won for academic talks about my work. Of course, as a scientist, I have true passion and enthusiasm for maths and physics, which lets me really bring out how fun, exciting and profound these subjects are.

My style as a tutor is to encourage an intuitive understanding of the subject through clear explanations and to build the confidence of students, equipping them with both the technical skills and the self-belief required to achieve their goals. In these subjects I think it's important to really understand the content intuitively and see the bigger picture, rather than just following recipes to get the answers, so I always try to get this across. Of course I also go into the finer details of specific problems, like the nitty-gritty of the algebra required in answering a particular question, building up my students' technical and analytical skills. Anyone can gain a deep understanding of such technical subjects, as long as they are given the right guidance and lucid explanations that start from the basics. This deeper understanding is a great thing in its own right, and ultimately leads to exam success. I teach physics and maths at GCSE, A-Level and University level, and to students of any ability. Typically lessons are 1hr, though I'm also happy to do longer lessons if required. I am flexible as to how sessions are spent, depending on the needs of the tutee. My experience tutoring has given me an appreciation for the importance of tailoring my lessons to suit each individual's needs and to work with them on strategies to reach their goals.

Mia was tutoring me for a Masters-level course called "Unification".
Unification is notorious for being one of the most difficult courses in the Physics degree at Imperial College, both due to its large scope, and the complexity of the content.
I remember walking away from the lectures confused and overwhelmed. However the tutorials with Mia were a tremendous help to understand Unification. From the way she tutored, I could see that she had thought about the concepts extensively and was thus able to express them in a very concise and understandable manner. If Mia can make an advanced Masters course on deep theoretical aspect of Physics simple, I can only imagine what she can do with more basic subjects!Unification is a MSc level course about the Standard Model and the Lie Algebra and Group Theory behind it. It is generally considered a difficult course, and requires a great deal of commitment, since there is a lot of new notation, new theory and new techniques. The problem sheets are therefore an essential part of the course.
Mia's role as Teaching Assistant required her to mark the problem sheets and then run a problem class to go through the solutions. She also produced printed solutions which were clear and easily understandable.
The quality of Mia's feedback was above and beyond anything I have encountered before. She conveyed huge enthusiasm for the subject, and was able to create an emotional connection with the students such that I felt encouraged to persevere with the questions long after I would normally have given up. Her marking was detailed and she went to great effort to show where things had begun to go wrong.
The problem classes were not only useful, but also enjoyable. The high level of the topic meant that some of the questions Mia was asked were extremely subtle, and potentially beyond the understanding of students at the beginning of their fourth year. However, her clear explanations and ability to relate incomprehensible questions to more familiar situations helped us enormously.Mia tutored my daughter towards her AS level in Physics in summer 2015. My daughter was struggling to grasp underlying concepts and Mia was able to provide the deeper understanding and helped make sense of what my daughter was covering at school. My daughter's test scores and her confidence improved and she went on to gain an A grade in the AS exam (before Mia she got a B in her mock); she is now going on to Physics A level (having previously intended to drop the subject). I would say Mia's strengths are her ability to explain key concepts, to support learning and build confidence, particularly for female students. Mia is patient, kind and takes a real interest in her student's progress.
