About Ryan
I graduated from California Institute of the Arts in 2004 with a Bachelor's degree in music. Originally I attended the school as a classical performance major, but changed majors to give myself a more rounded musical experience. I live in Austin TX with my wife and two sons. Music is a big part of our lives. It is something that I have had a lifelong passion for and also something that I love to share with others. I have taught piano privately off and on for the last 20 years and love to see students fall in love with music.

Every student wants something different out of lessons. Some want to simply be exposed to piano and music in general, some need to get ready for college auditions. With that in mind, each lesson will be tailored to the student's needs. With beginning students, I will stress the importance of building solid fundamentals at the piano (how we sit at the piano, hand position, note recognition, etc.). With more advanced students we can focus more on technique, theory in the context of the pieces we learn, and emotional playing. Listening is very important. Playing by ear is an important skill that we will also foster by listening to what we are trying to learn in between lessons. This applies to all levels of students. Before moving to Austin TX, I was a high school teacher, focusing on special education. It gave me the opportunity to realize that everyone has a different way of learning, and that if you find the right way, great things can happen. I've taken that lesson into my private teaching practice.
