About Maryellen
Chord voicing and sight transposition are skills I emphasise in every session. Honestly, I find that teaching jazz improvisation is the most demanding part of my work.
My Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the Royal College of Music informs my structural approach to the piano as well. Having taught 62 students, I recognise when a player struggles with sight playing.
Classical repertoire remains a core component of my curriculum. I assess individual needs to ensure technical growth remains steady. The goal is to prepare you for authentic musical expression on the keys.

Technique should never supersede the actual pleasure of creating sounds during practice. Paradoxically, the most rigid discipline provides the greatest freedom for the performer to explore new ideas. Because I have 5 years of experience, I know how to structure these sessions to ensure long-term retention. I provide a short recorded playback of each session so students can review at home.
This method allows you to analyse your own chord voicing and jazz improvisation techniques between our meetings. By utilising these recordings, you gain the ability to hear your progress from an outside perspective. I expect my students to utilise these playback tools to sharpen their sight playing and classical repertoire accuracy.
