About Russell
Hi, I'm Russ.
Music has been a big part of my life since I was young. I completed ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with High Distinction and have also studied violin to Grade 8 level, performing in orchestras and musical groups over the years in New Zealand.
While my professional career today is in business, piano remains something I genuinely enjoy and value. I've taught students in the past and have decided to open a small number of weekend lesson spots again because I enjoy helping others learn and develop confidence through music.
I understand that learning an instrument can sometimes feel intimidating, especially for beginners. My goal is to create a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and progressing at their own pace.
Whether you're a parent looking for lessons for your child, a teenager wanting to improve, or an adult finally deciding to learn piano, I'd be happy to help you on that journey.

I believe the best way to learn piano is through a balance of strong fundamentals and enjoyable music. Every student learns differently, so I tailor lessons to suit individual goals, experience levels and learning styles.
I completed ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with High Distinction and have previous teaching experience working with beginner and intermediate students. Whether you're learning piano for the first time, returning after a long break, preparing for exams or simply wanting to play songs you enjoy, lessons are adapted to help you progress at a comfortable pace.
Lessons typically cover reading sheet music, technique, rhythm, musical expression, theory and practical playing skills. I aim to create a supportive and encouraging environment where students can build confidence while developing good habits and strong foundations.
I teach children, teenagers and adults from beginner to intermediate level. Weekend lesson times are currently available.
One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is the give the ability to enjoy music as we play each piece. Learning technique is one thing, but teaching how to imagine and feel music is another thing all together.

I know Russell through a common friend and got to know of his music background. I was wanting to learn piano and we went for it.
Russell breaks down complicated passages into something simple and intuitive for me to understand making learning a piece of music faster for me. He understands my learning method and adapts to it.
I am glad to have had him as a teacher.I'd been wanting to pick up an instrument after never staying consistent while growing up. Russell, a good friend, encouraged and guided me no matter how uncoordinated I am.
I’ve known Russ for years and honestly he’d be a great piano teacher for anyone wanting to learn.
He’s super easy to talk to, patient, and never makes you feel stupid for not getting something straight away. He’s got a solid music background but explains things in a really relaxed and understandable way.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or getting back into piano after a break, I think you’d feel pretty comfortable learning with him.
Definitely recommend reaching out if you’re thinking about taking lessons.I have had the pleasure of being taught by Russell and can confidently recommend him to any student looking for a knowledgeable, patient, and supportive tutor.
What I appreciate most about Russell's teaching style is his ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and easy-to-understand way. He takes the time to ensure that me as his students fully understand the material and encourages questions throughout the learning process. His lessons are well-structured, engaging, and tailored to my needs and learning pace.As an adult beginner, I was nervous about learning piano, but Russell made the process enjoyable and stress-free. His patience, clear explanations, and encouragement have helped me improve far more than I expected. I would highly recommend Russell to anyone interested in learning piano.
