About Damian
Hi, I am a piano tutor with over 5 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. I fell in love with jazz because it rewards curiosity over perfection, and I try to bring that same spirit into every lesson. My focus is helping students build real improvisational skill, not just memorize patterns.
I work with a wide range of players, from teens discovering jazz for the first time to adults who grew up playing classical piano and want to loosen up. I teach chord voicings, comping, walking bass patterns, and how to trade solos in a small group setting. Ear training and rhythm work are built into almost everything we do together.
I once worked with a classically trained teenager who could sight read anything but panicked during a school jazz band audition. We spent weeks on simple call and response exercises until improvising finally felt natural instead of scary. She landed a spot in the ensemble and has been improvising confidently ever since.
If you want piano playing that feels alive and personal, I would love to work with you. Let's make music that surprises even you.

My methodology centers on improvisation and spontaneous musical thinking. Reading music matters, but I want students to also feel free at the keys without sheet music in front of them. We spend real time on scales and modes, not as dry exercises, but as tools for building solos that actually sound good.
From there, we dig into chord extensions and voicings that give jazz its color. I teach students how to hear a chord progression coming and react to it instead of memorizing every note in advance. Ear training sits at the center of almost every lesson I give.
Some students already read music well but freeze up the moment I ask them to improvise, and I slowly build their confidence with small, guided prompts. Others have a natural feel for rhythm but need help understanding the theory behind what they are playing. I offer tailored guidance so both types of players grow past their sticking point.
Improvisation should feel like a conversation, not a test. Let's get your hands talking on the keys.
