About CrystalL
Teaching saxophone offers a wonderful opportunity to guide students through a process that blends technical mastery with creative expression and emotional storytelling. I focus on helping students build a reliable technique based on breath control, embouchure development, finger agility, and rhythm, providing a solid foundation for playing across various styles. Tone development is central; I work with students on dynamics, articulation, vibrato, and phrasing to help them craft a personal and expressive sound. Music theory and ear training are incorporated throughout lessons and directly applied to the music students are learning, whether it’s jazz standards, classical solos, or modern pop arrangements. Improvisation is a vital part of my teaching, starting with simple scale and motif explorations that encourage creativity and develop spontaneous musical thinking. I use interactive exercises like call-and-response and play-along tracks to enhance listening and responsiveness. Lessons are tailored to the student’s interests and goals, from audition preparation and band participation to composing original music. One memorable experience was preparing a student for a regional honor band audition; through consistent tone work, targeted practice strategies, and mock audition sessions, they achieved a top chair and grew in self-confidence. I emphasize structured practice routines and achievable goals, helping students track their progress while keeping lessons engaging and motivating. Above all, I strive to create a supportive, inspiring learning environment where students develop into expressive, skilled saxophonists who find joy in their musical journey.

In my saxophone studio, I aim to nurture musicians who are not only technically proficient but also deeply connected to the emotional and expressive aspects of music. I believe that the saxophone is a powerful instrument for storytelling, and my teaching focuses on helping students develop their unique musical voice.
We begin with the fundamentals—tone production, articulation, and rhythm—ensuring that students have the technical skills necessary to express themselves fully. From there, we delve into the rich world of jazz, exploring its history, its masters, and its evolving language. Ear training is a cornerstone of my curriculum; I believe that a well-developed ear is crucial for both improvisation and interpretation.
Students learn to transcribe solos, recognize harmonic structures, and internalize musical phrases, all of which enhance their ability to improvise with confidence and creativity. Improvisation is not just about playing notes; it's about communicating emotions and ideas. I encourage students to take risks, to play with intention, and to listen actively to the music around them.
We use a variety of tools, including backing tracks, transcriptions, and composition exercises, to develop these skills. Performance is also an integral part of my teaching. I guide students through the process of preparing for and delivering compelling performances, focusing on stage presence, expression, and connection with the audience. My goal is to help students become not only skilled saxophonists but also passionate musicians who can move others with their music.
