About Jack
My name is Jack Bean, I am from Doncaster, in the UK but I travel the world with the freedom that online work grants. I studied Illustration and Animation at Bolton University in Greater Manchester and graduated with a 1st class degree with Honours in 2009. Since then, I have worked as a professional illustrator for children’s books as my full time career. I have refined my own style of illustration with over 20 years of experience in illustrating children’s books. Ten years ago I founded ‘Izzy and Jack’- a children’s book publishing company and have since published hundreds of children’s picture books for clients around the world.

I sell a complete, small-group mentorship for aspiring illustrators who want to build a professional portfolio, master print-ready illustration, and work confidently in children’s publishing. These lessons are live, interactive lessons online with a detailed, pre-planned itinerary, extensive resources, Q&A sessions, constructive criticism workshops, live drawing classes and homework every lesson to help illustrators understand how to make a career as an illustrator in the children’s book market. By the end of the course, illustrators will have: • A refined illustration style • A professional children’s book portfolio • Strong technical print knowledge • A personal brand • Confidence working with authors, publishers, and printers • Multiple finished illustration spreads suitable for pitching About the lessons: • 16 live online lessons (approx. 2 hours each lesson) • One lesson every 2 weeks (approx. 7–8 months total) • Small groups (max 5 illustrators) • Live drawing sessions • Constructive critique workshops • Q&A at the end of every lesson • Homework, templates, and resources included • Direct email support between lessons Lessons cover everything you need to know about your career in illustrating for children’s books. Some of the topics covered in the lessons will be; • Identifying your style • Building a professional portfolio • Building your brand (Website, logo and identity) • Pricing your illustrations (and preparing a contract) • Illustrating for Children • Visual storytelling • Diversity in children’s illustration • Character Development • Print essentials (Bleed & Trim, CMYK vs RGB, DPI and file formats) • Adobe Creative Suite • Communicating with authors (and accepting criticism) • Establishing boundaries • Colour management • Thumbnails and layout spreads • Angles, perspective and dynamic posing • Text and working with designers • Licensing and copyright (This is a brief overview and not an extensive list.) Lessons are suitable for everyone over 18 years and there are no restrictions on your illustration skills, although students are expected to have some level of artistic ability already. About me: I have been illustrating for children’s books for over 20 years as my full-time career. Ten years ago, I founded ‘Izzy and Jack’ - a children’s book publishing company. We have illustrated and published hundreds of children’s books for authors around the world. I have extensive experience talking and teaching in-groups - I host career days at schools regularly and am a guest speaker at the BBC’s touring ‘Bitesize’ event. I pride myself on creating a welcoming, relaxing environment for everyone, regardless of gender, sexuality, race or ability and make sure to listen to all involved so that each lesson is tailored at a pace comfortable to the students. Every lesson is followed by an email follow-up with an anonymous form to submit any feedback.
