About Julian

A native of Trumbull, Connecticut, Julian Shively is a virtuosic pianist, cellist, and composer whose artistry spans a wide range of genres and influences. Julian began his musical studies at age 4 on classical piano and the following year on cello. He played both instruments equally throughout his childhood, winning multiple awards and competitions on both. During his high school years, he switched from classical piano to jazz and subsequently graduated from McGill University with a double major in jazz piano and classical cello. His musical experiences have taken him across the globe, performing in a wide array of musical settings from serving principal cello positions in orchestras traveling in Western Europe and China, to collaborating with jazz ensembles in the United States, Canada and The Bahamas, to performing as a featured soloist 11 times with 8 different orchestras including the Danbury Symphony, Greater New Haven Youth Ensembles, Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras, Greater Bridgeport Symphony, Hamden Symphony, American Chamber Orchestra, Wallingford Symphony Orchestra and New York Sessions Orchestra. Julian is currently based in Montreal, Quebec where he continues to perform in and around the city, including regular appearances at Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill. He has recorded for various independent labels around the Montreal area and has appeared in festivals such as Montreal International Jazz Festival and Rimouski International Jazz Festival among others. His summers are typically filled with a variety of music festivals and institutes to further develop his musicianship as well as performances, teaching and coaching opportunities. During Julian’s time at McGill, he co-founded a jazz/R&B fusion band called Cône Orange with Montreal area musicians. The group made their debut in summer 2022. Post graduation, Julian continues to reside in Montreal where he actively engages in and appreciates the vibrant music scene. He is also taking the opportunity to study French.

As a professional musician who has studied and performs in both classical and jazz fields, I aim to provide the richest possible musical foundation for my students to build upon. All skill levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced! Lessons will comprise of many different aspects of music theory and writing. We will discuss my interpretation of harmony, voice leading, counterpoint, musical phrasing, and form as well as the many styles of music in the world and how all of these aspects exist in each style. Each lesson will aim to end with an assignment/goal for the next lesson. We will work together to gauge what is and isn't doable to accomplish, and I always keep note of what has been worked on each lesson in order to keep track of progress.
