My soul focus is to inspire, encourage & find passion in dance. I believe that a student works best in a positive atmosphere built around finding passion in a safe space to experiment & try something new. I teach free-work classes in Ballet, Contemporary Jazz, Musical Theatre Jazz, Technical Jazz & Tap for a range of levels. We will work on building core technique in each style, but also explore individual creativity. I give my students the tools of how to create choreography as well as how to perform it in a way that is personalised to them. I would recommend taking dance class to anyone with a love for moving since it gives confidence and a whole range of transferable skills for life, no matter what you go onto achieve. Classes are typically an hour in length including a warm up, technical exercises & choreography. I adapt my lessons to accommodate whatever space you may have, while seeking the same benefits from the class. I also have a DBS check. Let us find your spark of passion together, since you cannot be motivated until you are inspired.
General Lesson info -
- The content of classes are split into beginners, intermediate, advanced and professional.
- In the first taster lesson (free of charge) I will give a free work class to assess what set of work best suits the individual if they wish to continue. Then sessions will also be full of fun.
- Classes will not cover all the content outlined below in every class, but will vary each week to benefit the individual.
- My lessons always have an open conversation between the students & myself to understand what you want to do/work on.
Styles:
CONTEMPORARY JAZZ- This style is for breaking rules and experimentation. For me, it’s all about feeling rather than presentation. Core classical techniques are taught in the centre which are then transferred into movement combinations where there are no boundaries with creativity. All lessons start with a steady warm up and gradual stretch. Technical exercises include plie’s, tendu's, swings, shifts, twists, brushes, develope’s & grande battement. Combinations will include floor work, centre work, improvisation & creative processes. Strengthening/stretching includes plies, rises, spine rolls & cool down.
BALLET - This is the core style of dance which helps with every other aspect of movement you do. This class improves strength, technique, artistry & performance etiquette. Classes begin with a gentle warm up & awareness of body exercise. Barre work consists of plie’s, tendu’s, glisse’s, jete’s, fondu’s, frappe’s, develope’s & grande battement. I also use PBT exercises & centre barre dependent at what level we are working at. Centre work consists of pirouettes, adagio, tendu’s & petit allegro (dependent on space). 1-2 chairs/ballet barre is required for class.
TECHNICAL JAZZ - This class is built to strengthen Jazz techniques in the centre as well as increase flexibility. All lessons begin with a vigorous warm up/stretch. Technical exercises include kicks, pirouettes & battement. Strengthening exercises include squats, press ups, floor core work & lunges. Routines incorporate all exercises done in class.
MUSICAL THEATRE JAZZ - These lessons focus on performance and story telling a long with covering basic techniques. These lessons focus on incorporating acting with movement. Lessons consist of a brief warm up & stretch, then a couple of technical exercises (e.g. kicks & pirouettes), and then a routine for the remainder of the class. Pick up skills are developed, as well as the ability to create & portray characters through dance. It’s all about ‘Why are we moving?’.
TAP - A fun filled class dedicated to making rhythms & sounds with the feet. Dependent on experience, classes comprise of a foot warm up, various technical exercises (shuffles, paddles, cramp rolls, riffs, time steps, pick ups etc), and combinations with your creative input. Due to style requirements, you must have a pair of tap shoes and a tap board/laminate floor for class. For taster classes, I recommend hard soled school shoes on a hard floor (e.g. laminate) so that sounds made with the feet are audible.
CHOREOGRAPHY - I can also offer help with creating audition dances (solo’s) for College/Elite courses/Company auditions. You may want to book a couple of sessions for me to take a look & improve your routine, or you may want me to create the dance with you over a longer period of time. I am flexible with your needs, so use my services, support & encouragement however you wish.
