About Ethan
I received my bachelor's degree in English in the spring of 2017. My experience as a writing fellow, editor of a student literary magazine, staff writer and contributing writer to the student newspaper, and apprentice under a professional editor during my senior year of college, honed my writing and editing skills as an undergraduate student.
Since graduation, I have become a published poet and gained more than a year of professional editing experience. I currently work full-time as a content writer and SEO specialist for several businesses in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area. Outside of work hours, I manage my online freelance editing business where I provide professional, customized edits to documents such as resumes/cover letters, graduate school applications, professional letters of recommendation...etc.
I have worked as a one-on-one ESL volunteer tutor for a local nonprofit organization that supports displaced refugees with free language-learning courses, pro bono legal counsel, and other valuable resources. I helped a Sudanese client learn enough english to achieve her citizenship, which opened up many doors for her. I have also just begun as a reading/writing tutor for at-risk 5th and 6th-grade youth in the Iowa City Community School District.

It is my firm belief that one cannot successfully impart knowledge without first knowing their student. Therefore, I make sure to learn my students' unique interests and learning styles early on. I also let them know a little bit about myself in order to establish the necessary trust for a fruitful learning environment.
I then develop a lesson structure according to what I believe will allow each individual student to achieve success. I make sure to include the student in this process as well. I have learned that students who accept the responsibility to plan their lessons and map their personal learning progress are much more likely to achieve the goals we set together. No matter a student's goals, I always break up subject material into manageable 10-20 minute segments, introducing new or familiar territory when I detect frustration or dwindling attention span.
