Lecturing: go over the chapter, review the assigned homework, tell stories about how what is being covered was discovered and how it relates to everyday life.
Visual aids: Don’t just talk about the periodic table, project one on the screen and actively point out how the trends work! Draw atoms and molecules, and use arrows to show how THIS atom shares electrons with THAT atom.
Chemical demonstrations: Nothing keeps a class’ interest like a nice controlled explosion or a pretty colored flame, so once in a while, give it to them! Use their now captured attention to explain what’s happening and why. Tie it to your lecture if at all possible.
Hands-on experience: I’m a firm believer that lab work is the cornerstone of a chemistry class. Keep the experiments relevant to the lecture, and try to get them to reason out what they are doing and why.
