About Philip

Although I experimented with the guitar at a very young age, it was not until about age 15 that I took a serious interest in music, especially jazz. About a year later, I started playing professionally at a range of venues and events, both as a solo artist and in duos/trios. And at the age of 17, I was granted three national music awards.

Since then my passion and interest for music has only intensified. I continue to work as a professional jazz guitarist, performing with dozens of fellow musicians around the world. I have also had extensive experience teaching guitar, both privately and in workshop format.

Since 2019, I have released 3 self-produced and self-mastered albums as a solo artist, and one EP with my musical partner in Amsterdam. All of my albums and EP's could be loosely categorized as 'electronic'.

Second to music, philosophy and psychology are the other great passions of my life. In 2018, I began my BA in philosophy with a minor in psychology/neuroscience. I continue to study part-time. I have written and self-published several academic papers, one book and I regularly write essays for my online blog, many of which explore music and musicianship, often drawing upon recent findings in neuropsychology and philosophy.

I am currently working on a book entitled "The Meta-Musician". Drawing upon my extensive musical experience and academic background, the book will attempt to deconstruct the outdated music-educational orthodoxy, constructing in its place a new educational paradigm. This new paradigm will be deeply informed by the latest findings in a wide range of academic disciplines, as well as by the insights of world religion, native folklore, and culture and art more generally.

Hi there! I'm a guitarist with 18 years of experience playing Jazz, Blues, Funk, Pop and Finger-style. I have worked internationally as a bandleader, accompanist and solo performer, performing in countries as diverse as Australia, the Netherlands, Turkey, Georgia and Serbia.

There's a lot of music teachers out there, but the vast majority of them take the same old approach to teaching. They'll teach you scales, theory, chords - you name it. But that's all just information, and information alone does not make a great musician.

This is what sets me apart as a music teacher. Instead of taking the conventional "information-based" approach, I take a much more balanced, efficient and practical approach. This means that in addition to learning all kinds of information, we will also be taking a dive into the deeper principles which underpin that information. Learning these will set you up for life.

We will also be learning about the MIND, BRAIN and BODY - how they relate to music and how we can harness them so as to reach our highest musical potential.

My approach is informed by years of research into areas such as neuroscience, psychology, philosophy and meditation. I am currently writing a book which distills all of what I have learnt in the past years. This has allowed me to develop a truly holistic approach to music, one which promises not only faster improvement, but greater EASE, ENJOYMENT and CREATIVITY.

My lessons are available to all ages 12+ and all levels of ability. However, advanced and intermediate players will derive the most benefit from my lessons.
